If $500 is "negligible" then why the dilemma?
Ultimately, it's all a matter how you choose to spend your money.
We ate dinner last night at a really nice restaurant and it was $300 for two people; should have made my wife a PBJ and bought gems!

i don't mind supporting the game at all. I would rather catch up to my friends who are all th9-10+ rather than play for 9 months and get to the same level. I guess you're right, to save a week of time in game which only costs roughly 10 dollars which isn't much considering how much I could make if i worked one week.
Just budget an monthly amount you're comfortable with and stick to it. Things really start to get expensive at TH9 where upgrades all take 10-14 days so it's easy to go overboard with gems. I've probably spent $1k across 4 accounts and have only been playing for around 6 months. I gemmed everything in the beginning but quickly came to realize that it was just throwing money into a bottomless pit so I've cut back a lot lately. I keep some gems on hand for boosting and for convenience, such as completing a build a few hours early so I can go to bed but that's about it. The fun is in the journey not the destination, so what's the rush! :D
Sitting at over 4k so far, slippery slope if the money doesn't hurt you. King is sitting at 30, wanting to take him to 40 but waiting to see how everything plays out before I drop more. I have played their way since I started, always big armies cause I find it more fun, but doesn't help at all for troop upgrades or royals.
Just a tip, never do walls, you'll sink a fortune in those. If your going to gem, use it on the troops. Well, the inferno's jumping in fast helps too.
i raid enough that i dont gem on resources.. (although the new update has made it much harder).. but as i said gemming upgrade times is my vice i guess. Im trying to curb my spending since it is a free to play game lol. Just doesn't make financial sense to me logically, but due to impulsiveness i do it. (i work in the financial services industry)
There is a tremendous panorama of perspective, regarding the update.
You may find, in your case, the changes have little to no negative impact on your approach to playing. In fact, it is possible that you find the changes appealing.
I think it is safe to say, the millions of players will keep Clash of Clans in the green, for some time. If you enjoy he game, by all means, continue to play.
Thoughts about Clash going "downhill" can be characterized in many ways, quite a few of them aren't necessarily visible to the players (revenue, number of ACTIVE players, etc.). If you are curious, I think there are sites which track number of downloads, per app, per update.
I cant fault people who have filed claims with Google and gotten their money back, unless your a strong TH10 this update is not beneficial for you. It used to be nothing to get 6mill gold and elixir for upgrades, now I play and just when I hit 1 or 2 million I am kicked off to let my village rest after about two hours??
