Get them to 6.
Takes a while, but the payoff in damage is relatively worth it.
I'd also suggest upgrading all of your walls if you don't mind farming. It only gets harder to farm at TH9+.

If you max them now, you can stagger them and keep a builder on walls and get the best of both worlds and maximize your time more efficiently.
TH9 has a lot of builder time, for both defense and elixir projects (and Dark ones too AQ BK)
Tesla is hand down the best def in TH8 when maxed.
you wont regret doing them now, but I think you will have regrets if you wait till TH9 to max them out. They WILL help you save Dark Elixir when Maxed..
and TH8 can rebound from losses a bit better. if you are dumping gold into walls you will be less attractive target to the AQ..
100% recommend maxing teslas, take out pekkas fast which will come with gowipe. I didn't max them... Regretting it so much, but now they are well underway.
Max teslas and when you only have 1 builder free keep going on walls while the 4 teslas are being upgraded.
With the demise of TH sniping, you'll need the added benefit of maxed defensive structures
