I believe that the red area, that troops that cannot be placed on, should stay visible all the time when attacking. The red area is visible before troops are placed, but then it fades shortly after.
This is an issue as the only way to get the red lines back is to touch an area where troops can't be placed, meaning that I commonly place troops when I don't mean to.
