Im getting a lot of sideways running breakers lately. I tend to release 7 at once and I aways want them to head deeper in, but they sporadically run along the perimeter blowing walls I don't want blown. Is there a method I'm missing here?

Try a haste spell with a large drop like that. But your going to need a pretty long stretch of straight walls, and avoid corners, or anything near a maze entrance.
Sometimes I go with a large single drop of wb's to run ahead and blow up any possible big bombs in or near my planned funnel entrances.
The wallbreaker AI is fine the way it is right now, you just gotta understand it's thoughts to be able to work with him.
What i'm going to explain to you comes from this thread by Marika, and i really recommend you take a look at her thread. The wallbreaker doesn't look for the closest wall to break, as it doesn't look for walls. He is programmed to look for the closest trapped building that has to be set free from those annoying walls.
So when you've created an opening and place more wallbreakers on the same place as the first few wallbreakers the shortest path to other wall-surrounded buildings issn't straight into the base but (most of the time) the compartments left and right from your opening. in order to get your wallbreakers walk into the opening you could open the other compartments first with a few well placed wallbreakers so the new line of wallbreakers won't get distracted with setting those buildings free from those nasty walls surrounding them.
i hope this gives a bit more insight on the wallbreaker's way of thinking =)
cheers!
