No matter how many people quit, half of those left will still be upset
You create a game where half the playing population gains loot at the expense of the other half. For every winner there has to be a loser. Then, when those struggling to progress quit, the balance shifts so that those close to the cut line fall into the losing side. For those that had it bad, but not quite bad enough to quit, the game gets a little worse...
Then take this and remove any kind of a safety net, so it is possible that someone (depending on their play style) will literally never be able to progress.
Is it me, or does this seem like a really bad model for a game? Was it just an accident of the th snipe that let the game get as popular as it has? I guess we are all going to find out.
