This is a duplicate of the post I made there, but it's more appropriate to be asked here:

My response to her post (a partial quote above) was:
"I find this very confusing. The trading instructions at the beginning of the trade thread specify the LAST box and frequent traders will often have a request not to purchase from the last box in their signature.
Recently, I've noticed the last several boxes being used to sell expansion items quite frequently without ever seeing wheat prior. At first, I assumed it couldn't be a trade as it was several boxes so I went ahead and purchased. Than I began to wonder (and feel guilty) and watched. Sometimes, all would disappear (unknown whether it was a valid trade partner or just another player like me), sometimes just items from the last box would disappear and the adjacent boxes would remain for quite a while so I would then dare to buy them. Or the entire shop would be filled to capacity with an expansion item mixed in here and there and also occupying the last few boxes.
Now, I don't know what to do. How am I supposed to know which of the adjacent boxes is for trade or just up for sale with no trade planned, not even from the last box as I also often see stuff in the last box sit for 5-15 minutes (or even longer in a few cases). Aren't you supposed to wait until you know your partner is there before putting stuff into the box and shouldn't they be prepared to take it immediately so the trade isn't lost?
I suspect some players are putting expansion items into the right side boxes even though they aren't trading because they see so many others doing it but they've no idea that trading exists, they just think that all produced goods go into the left side boxes and all expansion into the right. I think this because it's most often the lower levels and the goods will stay forever during slow game times.
On each of the few trades I personally did, nothing was put into any boxes until I collected the wheat and then each item was put into the LAST box with the next item also being put into the last box after I collected the previous one.
Another confusion is when folks advertise an item in the paper, you go into their shop, and find stuff in the last box or the last few boxes. Are they just not realizing that advertising and trading at the same time is a bad idea or do they mean to have that stuff advertised?
Obviously, if you see a wheat, it's a trade so don't touch so should wheat be put into all of the boxes being used for trade rather than just the last? Or things go back to just the last box being used for all items in sequence? Or, perhaps, decide on how many adjacent boxes and update the first page of the trade thread?
I certainly don't want to interfere with a trade but I also don't want to miss out on something that's a valid, open sale because I'm confused."

Any update on the trading rules or any other information that those of you who trade frequently can give me to clarify this confusion of differing methods of trade (or not trade????) would be most appreciated. I wish to be a good neighbor and don't want to mess things up for folks because I'm confused or ignorant of the way of things. Thank you for any answers or advice you can offer.
