Im also a maxed th8 (except half lvl 8 walls) and the only way to protect against th9s as a th8 is to upgrade to th9

You can't... Not even if someone shows you countless threads of DE protection, it wont do u any good against lvl 6 troops, 4 spells, 30 cc, and 2 heroes.
Before poison update and before healers were immune to air mines you had a better chance.at defending having a cc full of wizards...but now no base can help you...It is useless now
