The Golem is to help keep the kill team alive. For us, the kill team is often wiz, B King and 1 L5 Pekka following the aforementioned golem(s). Hogs come in when defenses are distracted and/or just power through with heals where needed.
Yes, surgical can work, but that's a different strategy.
I agree with OneHive that I don't see the need for Giants as distract at TH8; you might as well simply bring additional hogs. L6 Giants get a massive bump at TH9, while the upgrade to L5 hog at TH9 isn't nearly as strong. Giants then seem to become much more valuable tanks to shield hogs, at the expense of sacrificing DPS.
okay but i mean like what are you trying to kill with the kill team though, I understand th9 the goal is to kill the queen and cc troops but at th8 can't you just lure the cc troops and kill them without the need of a golem?
Also surgical hogs just a method of deploying them not a different strategy.
Goho is primarily used on bases with possible double giant bomb spots. The purpose of the kill squad is to take out as many of these spots as possible as well as the king of possible (although killing the king isn't necessary.) I find that the main purpose of the golem is to distract point defenses while you create your funnel. It gives you a ton of time to patiently develop your funnel vs trying to rush your funnel without a tank and risk making mistakes and losing wizards. The golem also allows time to time mortar strikes with the wall breakers. If your golem survives the main push into the base, it will help keep your kill squad alive and will take out giant bombs and spring traps. Once your kill squad is deployed, I find the best placement is surgical hogs on the opposite side of the base. Make sure you plan where you will drop your heals before attacking. I recommend placing heals between groups of hog deployments rather than deploying all hogs first and then all heals next. The reason for this is that it allows you to divide and conquer the base rather than get overwhelmed trying to watch all your hogs and protect them from giant bombs
As another poster mentioned, check out One Hive Raids. Jake did an entire recap of TH8 vs TH8 where a majority of attacks were GoHo. As the others said, the Golem can tank for your kill squad to take out any DGB/GB locations and, if you don't want to take too much troop space away from Hogs, a smaller squad can break up the pathing that might lead the hogs into bombs (I try to use this when doing clean up attacks).
One Hive Raids and Clashing with CAM both have helped me with TH8 GoHo.
IMO, it's more of trigerring DGB and kill king if possible, other than that I don't see the need and a simple Hog attack would work nicely

Biggest threats to hog attacks after killing cc troops is double giant bomb and skele traps. If ur hogs are split up into groups the double bomb placement wont hit u as hard. When I was Th8 mass hogs (34-35) and a kill squad and cc clean up squad worked great. Goho at Th9 is more prominent as not only do u have 1 double bomb placement but potentially 2 on top of the massive damage a queen will do to wreck the whole attack.
You are trying to kill several defenses, as well as distract other defenses for your backside hogs. At least, this is how we do it.
Of course you can. I've become a straight hog run guy to the Nth degree nowadays (when I actually get to pilot a TH8, of course). GoHo is just another option. In my clan, a few of our attackers aren't as good with straight hog runs as others. GoHo, however, is an easier attack for them. Funnel B King, a few wiz and L5 pekka into the base, then backside hogs. It's a really strong attack, one of the strongest I've seen at TH8.
It also usually does really well as a first attack, as GBs are often popped by the kill team. This means if a GoHo misses, a straight hog run is almost guaranteed to be the clean up attack (in my opinion, a straight hog run is the strongest attack at TH8 you can do if you know where the GBs are).
Surgical release is most definitely a strategy. And yes, of course you can surgical with any hog based attack. I suppose what I should have said was it's irrelevant, as either a surgical or straight hog release can work with a GoHo.
