I think it rarely works and your relying on the "attacker" to be kind of heart to give you the free win. This gives attacker's incentive to climb leagues (aka give them incentives for being in higher leagues like winning defenses as well).
It doesn't have to be the "entire" league bonus every time, they could give it some "weighted" values based on the strength of the attacking army vs your current townhall level. I'm sure supercell can handle the details of the implementation. Weighted based on strength of opposing army could handle the "1 troop defensive cases" as well.
