That's a pretty vague question. In general, I would recommend using the lab to upgrade troops rather than spells, but if you use the lighting spell a lot, it might be worth it to you.
Yes, it is woth upgrading the ligthning spell.
It is worth investing and upgrading everything, simply said. Whether spells or troops. Which you choose to do is a matter of preference.
Obviously, upgrade the troops/spells you use then use them. I saw your other thread and I see that you maxed barbs, which is fine, and you then use them disproportionately more which is wise. Some folks were criticizing you, but I hopefully criticized the critics well enough in that thread.
Simply said, if you use lightning a lot, upgrade it! Funny thing, my troops and spells are all maxed now, and I still pretty much use what I used long ago. Creature of habit, I guess.

A cc full of lvl5 archers is really effective defence = a lvl3 or above lightning spell in the right place can take them all out in one go :)
So yes upgrade your lightning it's critical to many fights

If you have the time, patience, and resources, upgrade everything, it may not be useful currently with whatever tactics you're using, but someday it might... The lightning spell is my favorite, but then again I've never tried the Rage spell (even though it's lvl 3).
