What if I told you many of the people in legends have 10 tablets and they give themselves cheap shields, or that they leave their clan when they need to go on D and their clanmates/alliances gives them cheap shields?

It's fairly obvious that Supercell intend for players to be in the highest league their base strength and attacking skill will allow. They don't want players fishing in leagues below their strength level and picking on weaker players.
League Bonuses were introduced to incentivise players to push to their potential, but Supercell failed to address the flaws that arise in the highest leagues and the bonuses were also exploited with the sniping mechanic.
The upcoming update will introduce features that may end up frustrating players who don't play in their "rightful" league. It seems more stick than carrot on face value, but time will tell how it plays out.
I generally sit in Crystal 2, but after the update, gold may be a more viable option to try and find more TH9's so I can actually make a profit on that sweet, sweet DE. There will be zero profit hitting TH10's & 11's at this stage unless they fix it before the update drops.
Edit: a nice TH9 in Masters & Champs will be a very juicy prospect after the update if they only need part of their army to wipe it.

Loot helps you build your base, not trophies, and if you can get similar levels of loot in a low league then why go higher? - this is why trophies never mattered.
I'm not saying there isn't any skill in trophy pushing, but it has almost always only been possible by spending money or lots of time playing (certainly reaching the high end of the leaderboard) - this is again why lots of people never bothered with them
