Banned individuals

I was looking for information on if bans are permanent.
I noticed several posts (usually replys) from banned members that I feel had alot of merit.

I was thinking that the ban should start at a week or a month and double thereafter for each recurring offence.
As in first offence a week then 2, 4, 8, 16weeks...
It could be a shame to loose individuals capable of great ideas especially when they are given for free.
