If you wait on the final summary screen after an attack (the one that tells you how much loot and stars you got), you can just about make out all the troops exploding in the background. They explode in little spurts of elixir or dark elixir (depending on troop).
I think they get overwhelmed ;)
Just one of the decisions they made when the game was made, if they changed it all the stats would have to be completely changed. If someone kept attacking people with 10 P.E.K.K.A.s he could only need to wait a few minutes for them to train.
After an attack the troops realize they don't get to keep any of the loot. They become disgusted and leave.
