Walls are overrated
Take a look at the picture below:
http://i.imgur.com/A6cjAyo.jpg
You may notice it takes 2 level 5 wall breakers to destroy level 6,7, and 8 walls. What is the point to upgrade from level 6 to 8 walls unless you plan on advancing further to 9,10, or 11. Lets be honest, most of us don't have the time or money to get to level 10+ walls. I currently have mostly level 6 walls, people have told me my walls need "serious help." Now why should I spend the extra 700,000 (200,000 to level 7 walls and 500,000 to level 8 walls) to get my walls from 6 to 8 if the same amount of level 5 wall breakers will destroy the walls. Sure level 4 wall breakers take different amounts of wall breakers from level 7 to 8 walls, but to be honest no one with level 4 wall breakers would usually pose a threat to my defense/base.
To upgrade from level 6 walls to level 8 walls:
TH8- 700,000 X 225 = 157,500,000 gold
TH9 & TH10- 700,000 X 250 = 175,000,000 gold
Final Point: Unless you plan on going all the way to level 9+ walls, theres really no point in upgrading to level 7 or 8 walls from level 6 walls.

Wallbreakers aren't the only troop that attacks walls. Skull walls, especially, can really slow down troops like barbs gobs and giants.
-
does the very inside of your base get attacked by wallbreakers? what you're saying is true for the very outside of your base that usually only gets hit by wbs, but it's usually ground troops breaking the walls farther inside
edit: damn you're quick baconman ;)

If by overrated, you mean the advice around here about upgrading everything before going to the next th, then yes you are 100% correct. But, in practice every little bit helps. Wile it does take two level 4 wbs to break a gold, one of them takes it so close to zero that any ground troop can break it with a few hits.
-
I think it would be better detailed as 'upgrading ALL of your walls is overrated'
Exterior walls are to be eaten by breakers, often however breakers cannot piece the interior. That is where the investment is truly realized.
-
Walls are a way to show the world how much you play this game... So higher level walls may not necessarily be a good thing :p.
-
Also there is a psycological aspect to it. I might be less inclined to attack a villiage when I first look at it if it has all lvl 8 walls vs if it has all pink walls.
-
Aside from the obvious fact of other troops needing to break through walls sometimes, in practice you really only need one level 5 breaker for pink walls. A pink wall is left with 160 hp after taking a gold bomb, leaving very little work for your barbs/gobs/giants to finish the job. You really need L7 walls at least, to reliably force attackers to use 2 breakers on the perimeter.
-
I mean I guess when you get up there you're kinda in a rut, but if your attacker didn't bring enough Wall Breakers to allow for a margin of error and one of theirs screws up, then your walls would be left with 50ish% HP and they would have to use ground troops (or maybe pass through with air) to burst through the walls and that's when the extra HP might be critical to the battle. Also like Cclloyd said, a base with higher level walls does seem more threatening and powerful than one without.
-
Cause your base looks awful without them. Also upgrading walls protects your defenses from giants and barbs but your defense protects your walls from wall breakers.

I agree with maxing th7, including level 7 walls, completely before going to th8.
I will not be completing level 8 walls, however, before moving to th9.
But I will continue to upgrade the walls in the very center.
-
One other thing to take into account is that not everyone maxes their WB's. I know of some TH9 and 10 players that have Lv3 WB's. Personally, I like to max my walls for 3 reasons: 1) intimidation, 2) burn-off excess gold, and 3) upgraded walls look cool.
-
The higher the walls, the less likely I will attack!
-
When I had all pink walls with my current base layout, I got raided ALL the time.
Now that I have all lvl 7 and some level 8 walls, I rarely get attacked....in fact, my gold storages haven't been hit by anything other than lightning spells in about 3 months. They add a very intimidating factor to your base no matter what.
Walls are definitely worth it.
