Why can't I purchase gems with gift cards?

A few months ago I purchased a $50 google play card and used it to buy a pile of gems. Now when I try to buy gems, it won't allow me to use the remaining credit to do so.
I now have the " buy gems" tabs shadowed out and when I click one of them it tells me I need to add payment method details, i.e credit card details, into my google play account.
I have purchased gems numerous times in the past using gift cards, but no longer if I have to used a credit card.

It has done that to me in the past, just give it some time and it should fix itself.

Login to google by itself and "redeem" gift card, this will put a balance on your google account. Once you do that, it will automatically purchase using the credit on the account.

Are you accounting for taxes with your remaining credit?
