So even if you have a max lvl earth quake it still takes 4 spells to take down walls. What was the point of the upgrade? When will it get to the point of 2 or 3 spells needed to knock down walls.

I believe that it will always take 4 spells to knock down walls. With upgrading the spells all that happens is that you get a higher damage to buildings around the walls.
I really have no idea honestly lol. I'm a max th10 and still haven't upgraded earthquake. I kinda just don't get it. I mean I'll upgrade it, but there seems to be very little point. At least makes it shot lava out of the ground and look cool.
It would be way to over-powered if you could take down walls with 2 EQspells. Right now I have to sacrifice an elixir spell to carry 4 EQ. If I could take 3 rage & 1 freeze or 2 rage & 2 freeze in addition to the EQ spell, I'd be ripping through bases like a hot knife through butter.
I can't speak for everyone else that uses it, but even though I'm using it to break holes in walls, it also always hits buildings. Since those buildings are in the path I want my troops to take, upgrading the spell to do more damage to the buildings makes sense because the troops need to do less damage to destroy them.
Or to put it another way, the more damage the EQ spell does to buildings, the less time my troops are taking fire while destroying those buildings on the way to what I actually want them to target.
I may be bringing down a wall in front of an inferno. It takes 4 EQ of any level to bring down the wall. But 4 level 1 will also effectively do a level 2 lightning on the inferno. 4 level 3 will do 2 level 5 lightnings instead. That is why I upgraded, if that doesn't matter to you then there is no need to upgrade.
Before the update it was not worth upgrading definitely, as the damage % to building was like 6-10%. But now, a single max EQ spell will deal 25% damage to a building, which is 1375 damage to a TH10, and to all other surrounding buildings such as xbows and inferno towers.
A single lvl3 EQ spell will deal 966 damage on a TH9, which is even better if you are opening a passage near the TH.
