I gem 2-3 times a year and always for resources. The rest of the time I have fewer than 50 gems on hand for a 1 gem boost event or to speed up troops during war donation requests. The resources I get are always to get something big. First xbow, first inferno, etc. Right now I am saving up loot in war castle so I can then gem max freeze and still have elix on hand afterwards. May not be the best plan but it has kept me playing for almost 3 years now.
