2-3 stars on pretty much every first attack isn't a waste though. We mainly do 15vs15 wars and average 38-41 stars out of 45 total.
And ofcourse, if we get a matchup where one of our weak TH7's have to attack a medium/strong TH8 we'll tell them to attack someone else or try to barch someone for loot and let the others handle his base. And we know the teams troopstrength, that's why we do very well on cleanup attacks, which is a lot easier knowing what's waiting for you like said before.
Yes.

Nope: Mirrors don't mean anything :)
take a base you can 3 if th9, or 2 if th10
I won't go as far as this, but in a mostly th10 clan, vague mirrors work out fine.
I do agree that blindly attacking exact number is a waste of time, and the pattern has to be adjusted up and down according to the strength of match.
My top 10-15 are all 35/35-40/40 95k+ bases, so are by far the most confident and consistent at hitting the top bases.
The more of those that go down in 1 shot, frees up more of the top attacks for cleaning up (particularly when weaker 10s struggle) or looking to 3* the weakest 10s.
Only short sighted noobs focus so much on their mirrors. Clan wars require team work and strategy. Your loot haul is not one of the concerns you should consider when choosing an appropriate target to attack.
If someones attacking your mirror, your probably in a poorly managed clan.
We use a mirror strategy and no one has their mirror stolen for the first 12 hours. We win most wars too so the strategy does work for certain clans.
