Yes and no. My primary got stalled out at mid th9 (darn work interfered ). And my mini caught up to th9 so i started the 8.5 thing to keep them somewhat different. So far it has not totally panned out as advertized. It takes a while to get 3 star stratagies going and several attempts to get them to work. And your a drag on the clan (easy 3 star) until all comes together. Also, lvl 15+ heros seem to be a big plus and add more time to the point of when it really pays off for the clan. As a side note it does not help alot if your not in a serious war clan and have some premie th9's that cannnot pull their own weight.
It's worth it, atleast untill you get your Hogs to level 5, Golem to level 4, Hound to level 2, Loons to level 6 and Witches to level 2. And Queen to level 10-15. You'll be the lowest TH9, but you'll be able to attack up to mid-high TH9s in the clan war. Otherwise you will be a mid TH9 but you wouldn't be able to attack anyone with the same war weight as yours. Work on the walls, heroes and traps while you're in TH8.5. Because you tend to forget these while doing upgrades in TH9.
Just don't build your xbows until you have a decent offense.
Honestly, you can only determine the worth of (.5) Th's based on other people in your clan. If your clan is full of crappy th9's and 8's, than an 8.5 rank will basically put you in a perfect spot to really do some damage to your equal in clan wars. the goal here is that you're going to get matched up against a th8 in war and you'll have th9 troops to really put a hurt on them. But if theres other people in your clan also doing 8.5 or something else that is going to screw up your war rank, it really doesn't hold as much value.
For example, we have quite a few maxxed th8's and th9's in our clan, and at least 3 people are trying to different variations of th8.5. But to be honest, with a lot of maxxed bases, we tend to get pretty difficult match ups in war, so those 8.5's end up being matched against mid range th9's pretty often. Kind of negates the benefit of being an 8.5 altogether. So it's not working out great for us at the moment, but Ive seen it be pretty successful when you're the only 8.5 in the clan, so theres still a market for it.
