Thanks guys!! I am a casual farmer. Based on your experiance/suggestions, I would go with the step upgrade option, giving priority to AQ. Currently my AQ is being upgraded to lvl 12... Thanks to all for ur valuable inputs... :)

Queen is by far the better hero. If you can afford to upgrade her (Cause she's clearly always more expensive), then do it. I upgraded my heroes 1 by 1 all the way to lvl 30, but even though that looks pretty, it really doesn't make any sense when you think about tactical advantages. At the very least, be smarter than i was and upgrade 5 lvls at a time to get the better hero ability at each interval. And like i said, I'd recommend queen first. But I'm taking queen strait to lvl 40 before i touch my barb king again. She's been asleep for 7 weeks strait and I'd like to see her get to max without any breaks. heres to hoping!
I'll do +5 until both 20/20. Then AQ all the way to 30. Then BK30.
TH10, AQ all the way to 40. Then only work on BK.
When you got it, spend it. Pure and simple.
I'm alternating between the Royals. Cheapest upgrade first. It works for me.
Following the "cheapest first" plan will allow you to max out Dark troops for TH9 when the Royals hit BK17 and AQ15.
After that, resource demand will be higher and higher, but the TH should be defence maxed and full on attacks more and more rare as all surplus resources go into walls. (provided the TH is sitting un-trapped in a corner)
The Dark spells were introduced, and I upgraded them to 2-2-2 during my vacation. They will go to 3-3-2 during my next vacation in about a month. Everything is planned.

Definitely makes sense to try and do them in 5 level increments, you don't really notice your hero getting stronger until you hit a new ability level.
Clearly looking here do what suits you best. I did both alternately 1 level at a time until Lv20. Now AQ is about to drop to go to 25 and BK is 20. Once she is at 25 I will pull him up to 25 then AQ to 30 and so on.. Worked for me.
Definitely do step upgrades in my opinion. I find it works great.
Here is the plan I used:
First, queen to 15 then king to 15, queen to 20 then king to 20 then queen to 25 and king to 25
After that queen to 40 then king to 40
2 levels remaining for maxing king and queen maxed long time now
I've been doing them both at the same time, to try and cut down on the amount of time they take to do individually, with my priority being to keep the queen upgrading constantly.
At the minute my queen is upgrading to 25 and my king to 23.
I'm a th9 BTW.
