Depends on your troop levels. BK above 5? Golems max for 8?
Barb king maxed. Golems only level 1 tho.
Are you a war enthusiast? If so, then you'd want to consider making sure you have lvl4 hogs, lvl2 valkyries, LVL10 BK, Lvl5 heal and rage, and lvl2 golems before going to TH9. Also, when you do go to TH9, make sure to become something known as a TH8.5. Effectively, all you'd buy defense wise are any extra traps, and the AQ, and then max out your offense (Max TH9 GoHoWiWi, GoLaLoon, GoVaLo, and at least LVL10-15 royals) before I'd consider even buying another defense.
If you're a farmer, then max everything out first for sure. Loot penalty gets harsher up at TH9. I'd max out farming troops like loonion, gibarch, gobs, healers, etc. and probably get a LVL10 BK. At TH9 start pumping up your AQ and Healers and start using Super Queen. It's a strategy I recently learned of, and looks viable for TH9 farming.
So basically, you have both gold and DE upgrades. Stay at TH8 wait until you're finished with 2/3 of the upgrade resource needs.
Take your time. I had everything maxed out as far as troops and defenses, all I had were walls left to finish and ever since I upgraded I've been getting destroyed lol totally worth hanging around th8 a little while longer
