I have better luck using a GoWiWi variant during war but love Loonions for farming.
Focus on Golems, lavahounds, hogs , valks, healers and loons. Those are the troops you'll be using very often in war if you want to 3 star

Level up your Golem first. It is the common troop for almost all variations. lavaloonian and Gowiwi both are 3star attacks however I suggest you to master gowiwi first as it makes lavaloonian easy later.

If you war, go for ground first. Easier to 2 star. Once you are more develop, then go for air. Attacking using GoLava will aim for 3 stars..
