Trapped Outside Town Halls

Lately, I have noticed more and more farming layouts with town halls sitting outside the walls and surrounded by hidden teslas. At first I thought this must just be new players who don't understand the whole concept of farming but then I noticed that a lot of these were TH9 and TH10 players that you would assume know better.

The whole idea of putting the town hall outside the walls is twofold:

1. Easy Shields
2. More room in the center of the base to protect resources.

Trapping the town hall with teslas (that could have been used defending your resources) is counter-productive. If I am trophy hunting and I run across a farmer then I always take the outside town hall and then move along, ignoring the rest of the base. After all, it's free trophies and they come with a minimum troop cost. This leaves me free to immediately move along to the next base without training more troops and the farmer gets his free shield for the night. Everyone wins.

When I come across one of these tesla-trapped town halls, however, the first thing I do is drop a golem to avoid the risk of losing trophies. Now that I have dropped a golem (costing 675 Dark Elixir) I am compelled to commit all of my forces to the base in order to recover my troop and spell costs. In this scenario, I get at least two stars and, more often than not, a full three stars plus all of the base's resources. In this scenario, the only one coming out ahead is me.

Am I missing some hidden farming strategy here or are there really this many players at TH9 and TH10 who have no understanding of why they are using a farming layout? I'm confused. I counted 12 of these tesla-trapped town halls in a row the other day!

Hidden telsas take out quite a bit of troops,most ppl put telsas near the townhall to keep the player from getting greedy and going for the resources

The appropriate term is "trolling", and I love doing it from time to time. Makes for much more entertaining replays.

I just have mine in range of the rest of my base. It's hilarious to watch some one spend 100 archers taking it down and then try to snipe my mines and pumps for another couple K.

I suppose that might work against an attacker who is running with tier 1 troops but larger players aren't just going to stroll onto a base with nothing but low level troops. The teslas are FAR better placed near the resources. It's the whole point of the farming layout. If that is, indeed, the logic behind their thinking then I can show you a dozen videos I have made of why this is a Bad Idea. I'm not wasting 100 archers on teslas. I am simply going to drop 1 to 4 golems (depending on the base strength) and then drop a rage spell and a few teslas. Then I'll drop the rest of the troops to clean up.

Just curious... 100 archers? People are really trophy hunting like that (unprepared)??

So you guys are saying that, just for replay amusement, they are negating the purpose of their layout intentionally?

I wouldn't assume that simply because they had th9 or 10. Some of the worst players I've seen so far were 9.

That is very true... I just took a TH10 sitting inside ....wait for it... a level 3 wall!

If you waste a golem and rage just to get my resources, and get all my resouces, then ill be happy to let you have them, if you are willing to waste such an assortment. Teslas behind th just give some funny replays because no one gives me any good replays.


I almost never do it though.

I sometimes put my teslas my my town hall so people with my 6/7 archers will have to surrender and then I can gain trophies. Usually I don't though.

I don't know what they think they're doing but they do it, i still get a cheap shield and a little chuckle. So far so golemns but I'm just a pathetic loser level 111 that only fights level 50s and below.

I used to do this at TH7, you get bored of not having good attacks to watch. Even if you did 3 star and take 200K, it still shows me my base weaknesses and i can get the gold back in 1 attack anyway.

I am currently one of those "trapped" townhalls (lvl9)

My clan just started chasing trophies and being a farmer, I just can't bring myself to put my TH inside walls. So I got creative and honestly I am shocked how well this works.

This set-up does very well for protecting the resources I want safe, and gives me plenty of defensive wins.

If anyone knows how to post bases please post mine, I would love some feedback for this design.

Do you use pillows and broken glasses?

I would love to watch your replays with golems :)
I used to have my th outside my walls but i wouldn't say that its easy to destroy, its covered by most of the extra buildings and obviously(i think) trapped.
it was also the best path to get my storages, i made it that way not to just get some easy shields. It was because this way i was sure all the attacks would come from that direction and i could put all my traps there. Plus the high hp of the town hall supports my defenses.
and before the person realizes that their halfassed attack wont work they've already lost a lot of time and have to think up a new strategy quick.
this is a very effective defense i use till now, just added 1layer of walls because I'm cupping whenever my elixirs are full
