I play on an iPad 2, iPad Air, and iPhone 6. The Air & iPhone have the fastest load and base search times. The iPad 2 seems to lag behind them a little bit on that, but otherwise, they are all really nice. I only use my phone for troop donations and collecting. Once you raid on a the larger size screen, everything else seems tiny.
All that being said... I'm interested to see if Apple releases the long awaited iPad Pro next month. I would be interested to see reviews of Clash players playing on that.
I first started Clash on my Nexus 7, it was great.
Recently I've upgraded to a Nexus 9 for the greater size and the fact lollipop ruined the 7. (although it stilled played Clash very well).
My N9 works great, and I've never had a problem with it (let alone with clash). Good battery life, but it an overnight charger. (It will still slowly gain more charge than you lose if you're playing clash and charging)
I love putting four fingers down to get my barbs swarming all over a base full of loot.
Other tablets that I've seen that are good; The Tesco Huddle 2, its cheaper than most, run wells and smooth. Currently has KitKat 4.4.4 (my personal favourite OS), 7" but is heavier in weight than most.
The Samsung galaxy tab series are quite good, run well although I don't think the battery life is the best. Everything else is good, including if you go for the larger size (10").
And I also hear good things about the Apple Air and Minis, bear in mind they will cost a pretty penny but so did my N9.
My friends who have these say they run great, just never drop them. (or put them on a hedge)

Edit, just realised you play on your Iphone, would be far easier going for one of the Apple tablets then (silly me).
Anything over 7" is enough, so don't feel like you need the largest out of the lot. But speaking from experience of using a 9" after being used to my 7" its so much nicer.
I wouldn't want anything much bigger than my 9, since it may get hard to hold (achy wrists) and becomes less portable. (and more expensive)
ipad 4, it has the retina screen and is larger than the air (i think)
I suggest you get a Nexus 7(2013) or an Asus Memo Pad 7-ME572C, which are both currently in the $150 price range if you're looking for a cheap one that excels. I have the first one mentioned and it has never let me down in a raif, and at 7", it is perfect for portability, thumb reach, and price.

I have and use (daily for CoC) a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5...a Lenovo S8 (8")...and an ipad mini I think it is.
I far and away prefer the Galaxy Tab S 10.5. It is awesome. Excellent colors, contrast, visibility, auto brightness, speed, good battery life...love it.
The Lenovo can be had for less than half the price but it is a lower quality image and noticeably slower at times plus the battery life is not very good. And the iPad mini is an apple which means it's simply not as good plus the kekyboard sucks.
