What if.. the spammer is lurking? :smirk:

It hasn't been an hour since this thread was posted and the Forums are under the attack of bots already...
This is a nightmare to fix, and you're correct, vbulletin is basically "featureless" in this regard. You can create a new usergroup and limit them to only being allowed to reply to threads, and not create them. However, there isn't any promotion system so the members would have to be policed manually. That is pretty much impossible for someone to constantly monitor new member posts.
The other option, is to install "3rd party" plugins, or Super Cell can create their own, that would set limits on when users can post threads based on post count, etc.
The only issue with that is, bots will still be able to reply to threads with their spam. I've been managing forums running vb for ten years, and the problem hasn't ever been "solved". Moderators policing spam is the one thing that can be done effectively.
You guys have your work cut out for sure.
This is absolutely awful, I don't even want to look at General anymore because of the endless spam. I've reported the posts but Supercell just doesn't have enough manpower to help.
There really needs to be a new solution. Make it so fresh spawns can't make any threads? Isn't that easy enough?
Strongly recommend you guys put up some temporary mods because the spam has definitely gone pretty wild the past couple of days. Having 1-2 active forumers in the opposite time zone (near India would be optimal since the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spammers are active during that time). Though doing so would be rather difficult :p
We shall see. :smirk:
But dont get your hopes up. :p
Not quite a simple as that. If we thought they could be a mod for an hour, they would be a perm mod. The first and most important issue is of course the non disclosure agreement that must be signed, as well as the age limit of 18+. There are also many other factors (training, support, information).
Question is.. Why aren't the mods at home?
ClashCon is in October. :p
Plugins are a tricky topic. And because as soon as a new version of vBulletin comes out, it gets updated here. Meaning all plugins installed are useless until they are updated. Often the plugin devs do not update, or take a while to get around to it.
We could have 100 more mods, but it wouldn't change the fact we would still all be in Helsinki, and we would still all be in the same time zone.
I wish it was that simple, but as I mentioned earlier, there is no differing between creating new threads and commenting on threads. Make it so fresh spawns cant make threads > means fresh spawns cant post.
And if we make it too hard for them to post, they then post the spam inside threads. Which is even more difficult to moderate.

With all the above said, we have also had some great discussions over the past few days, and are looking at solutions to stop spam and ways to improve the forums.
