Old but nice: if you are upgrading a troop, fill the all the barracks with this troops Before the upgrade ends and when it's over, you can sell the troops and get a small bonus of elixir.

Even better than that - you get a percentage refund of the bild cost when you donate at that level (% amount varying according to your clan level).

So the total cost to you will be less than the cost of a level 3 dragon.
