Farm DE in heavy sessions while boosting your barracks, spells and/or heroes.
I'm in the same situation as you, but I don't really have the time to do that so I just boost my DE drills. Never buy DE directly with gems (lol at the post above) because the DE/gem ratio is too small - you can get heaps more by boosting drills/barracks.
The best use of gems to push hero upgrades is to farm and use gems to finish now.
The other use would be to boost and do some raiding to gain de. Do not buy DE

Earn the dark, gem the time. To save more on gems, gem the time of the king when he gets half way and gem queen time right away.
What I am doing with my gems is:
Earn the dark. Start my queen at the end of a farming session. Let her upgrade until the next day when i start to farm or need to do a war attack. Saves me over 100 gems per level, which is nice.
@dhaddix - interesting statement... I am also in a similar situation as OP, may I know why u gem the time of the king at the halfway point while the queen right away?Quote:

I know for lab upgrades, the best time to gem (save time) is right at the start the moment u upgrade... the longer the time left, the more value u get in terms of time saved per gem... trust me i did analysis on an excel spreadsheet for this. LOL
16K? Wow, rich guy there. The most effective usage of gems are to boost barracks/factory spell and hero's health for farming usage, gemming donation war troops for clanmates, gemming hero's upgrade time if you have a full tank DE sitting there waiting for your heroes to wake up.
