Just tell them the truth. Be nice about it, and move on. I left my clan and took a bunch of guys with me. They were mad, but they will let us back if we want. Honesty is the best policy.

They were a nice bunch.
They understood that the clan was dying, and that I was not a fan of inactivity.
They were quite polite about it and always accept me back for a small visit.
If you mean as much to them as they do to you, they'll do the same (assuming they're not the type who say, "Stay with us permanently or not at all. We only have room for the devoted.").
And with that post, I take my leave of this title in favor of my Queen.
I know I can never go back, and I am happy.

Just tell them you won Americas next top model... When I have to kick long time members I just tell them "You're no longer in the running for Americas next top model." (Of course I explain to them outside chat why.)
