I think TH8.5 may be useless! I just worked out:
A TH8.5 would: Max army buildings, Get 10/10 hero's, and max one war army comp before opting back in wars.
A TH9 would: Do what is above and build XBows.
Both people would attract TH9s
Both people would attck the same.
They opt out of war the same amount of time.
So is TH8.5 really worth it? Or should everyone once they get TH9 pop up XBows and get to LVL 3 ASAP?
It isnt useless, it is just for people who are cowards enough to war against clans equal to them.

If you went to TH9 and build both xbows and upgraded them asap, along with your other D, you would be facing bases in war, that would be too hard for you to attack well. An 8.5 will still be matched against an early TH9 almost always. As soon as you get your AQ and level some troops, you will certainly face TH9s. The point is, you won't be facing TH9s with high level Air D, xbows etc, until you level your offense enough to handle those defenses.
We had a base last war that was a TH9 and was ranked in the middle of their TH8s. He had a level 1 AQ and all TH7 level walls and defenses, except level 6 air d and the extra air D for Th9. Well none of our TH8s could do much against it, with the AQ in the center of the base. So we needed to use a TH9 attack on it. Pretty smart, made us use several attacks and waste a TH9 attack, on an otherwise easy Th8.
It is worth if you are the only th 9 or some th 9s in your clan has no x bows too. Not worth if some of your th 9s has xbow

Supercell's main focus on the game has always been balance. If you're a new th9 you should be matched with and able to attack another new th9. The game wasn't designed for th8s to be defending and attacking th9s, so by doing th8.5 you're basically ♥♥♥♥♥ing the system to bring yourselves unfair matchups which can be just as frustrating to the opposing clan as a war against ♥♥♥♥ders. Keeping your offensive and defensive strengths equal is the fastest and most efficient way to play the game, and that's the way the game was designed to be played. I don't see much reason to be 8.5. It takes just 12+10 days to max out lavahounds and loons or 14 days to take hogs to lvl 5. If you are in a clan where 8.5 is a thing, then you surely have other people who can take care of new TH9 like you while you keep 3 starring max TH8. If your clan cannot afford you attacking TH8 instead of TH9 for around 3 weeks while your offence catches up, then someone as hardcore as you should be in a better clan. If it can, then you don't need to suffer from the 8.5 farming disadvantages.
In short, TH 8.5 seems pointless to me. It didn't take me long to be able to 3 star enemy TH9 after I upgraded to TH9.
This is an offense oriented game. Your should always prioritize your offense ahead of your defense especially when you make a transition to the next TH. This is also true in clan wars which is why I believe in the .5 THs. It's more of a race of who can get the most stars then worrying if your defense can hold up.

Your opinion about how the game was designed to be played is just your opinion. Before Supercell released clan wars it made more sense to play that way. It's still a fine way to play. But it's NOT the only way to play. If you can't accept that clan wars have forced players to rethink strategies that's your problem. The game has evolved.
If you want to stay stuck in the past, good luck. If you want your clan to dominate clan wars then it needs to adapt to the current reality.

If you have a weaker base then odds are you will be 3 starred. So the absolute best you can hope for is that you 3 star someone. Thereby cancelling yourself out. How is that brave? You've rendered yourself a liability or useless to your clan.

Ok. Let me settle this argument once and for all.
Town hall 8.5 is not useless. Being an 8.5 allows you to upgrade your attacking power so you are CAPABLE of 3 starring a town hall 9 with xbows. Xbows are weighted enourmously. If you get your xbows first, you would not be able to 3* your equal in war, and you would be a hinderance to your clan. The time you spend at 8.5 is a personal preference. Once you upgrade your troops enough and you feel comfortable with 3 starring a th9 with xbows, go right ahead, build away.
If that doesn't make sense, here's an example:
Building xbows before upgrading at least one war troop is basically equivalent to racing in a Nascar race with a bicycle. You need to have the troops (read as 'car' in this example) to even consider competing at that level, not to mention the skill and practice.

People like to call unfair match ups all the time but those who know how to use the system to their advantage. I bet those complaining do the same. Do you hit next when farming? Why? To get an easier opponent or more loot. If you want things fair take the 1st opponent who comes or use the system to your advantage. Just like clan wars.
its not an unfair advantage we just choose to play the game differently. Btw if everyone did the .5 method it would be even again.

With a weaker base odds are pretty good I will be 3 starred. Most th8s get 3 starred in wars. Sometimes the th9s have to come down to help clean up the th8s. Is that unfair?
The absolute best I can hope for is actually 3 starring two bases, because we each get two attacks. Since they can only get 3 stars out of my base, and if I can get 6 stars from their bases, I am not canceled out. If I fail both my attacks I'm not helping the clan. It's brave to do this because if you don't succeed your clan will be at a disadvantage.
You can't claim it puts my clan at a disadvantage while also complaining it's cowardly. Because it's not. It's brave.

The advantage of 8.5 is being able to attack BELOW YOU, ABOVE YOU and ACROSS FROM YOU.

Just imagine when you are a TH8, did you try to go up against high level TH9's? Probably not, and if you did you probably didn't do very well. Well same thing applies here, you're still TH8 offensively but now you are matched up against a TH9 and have no choice. Well I guess you have the choice to drop down really far and hit a TH8, but THAT is what I would consider to be cowardly.
I've done it both ways now. My main account, I went to TH9 and immediately built and upgraded everything. And I used to get so frustrated every war at not being able to attack the guy I was supposed to be matched up against that I was literally ready to quit the game, or at least quit clan wars cause I was so mad. It took me a couple months before I was able to really hold my own against the bases directly across from me that were supposedly my equal. My secondary account, I've slowed things way down and am taking my time and upgrading all my offense first, and I'm having a much more fun go of it this time. I'm actually 3 starring my opponents, and I'm even getting to the point where I can move up and clean up bases above me now. My advice to anyone going to TH9 would be go slow on defense and upgrade offense first so you'll be ready to hold your own once you start getting the hard matchups. You'll be more helpful to your clan and you'll have more fun doing it, as well.

TH8.5 is the stupidest thing I've ever heard in Clash History. A complete waste of time, and useless if your whole clan doesn't do it. It only helps to get you a "better" target in war (against your mirror), but ANY DECENT war clans will know that attacking your mirror is not a viable strategy because of war weighting. TH8.5s just want to make themselves look good by them being #15 and attacking #5 on the war map, instead of another normal TH9 who is #10 on the map and attacking #15. Completely pointless if you ask me. Gives your clan no advantage, you just attack higher opponents. So what?!

I have to say i think .5 is completely useless. I just started th9 12days ago from a completely maxed th8 base. During last wars, when i was still a th8, i faced several th8.5 and i didnt have any problem at all 3 starring them as i didnt have either any problem to 3 star any th8. I even asked my clan if i could attack the th8.5 as they give nicer win bonus. Well you're a much better attacker than I've seen in any war for months. I've never, ever seen a TH8.5 3 starred by a TH8. I've seen plenty of TH9 fail to 3* TH8.5s. And apparently you 3* every time against TH9 targets with TH8 troop levels - again I see this so rarely. I mean a few of our guys do when the enemy has very bad layouts or is very rushed, but in any sensible war... nope.Quote:

First th8.5 almost doesnt have any major difference with th8 except queen mainly, which is normally low lvl and doesnt change much an attack if you use a good strategy. So if you can 3 star maxed th8 bases then you should be capable of 3 starring 8.5. I usually didnt find any bigger complication than one that you can find on a th8 maxed. And i can assure you ive 3 starred a few of them. Second xbows dont give much more defense power. When i was a th8 i usually attacked tough th9 with xbows and usually i got 2 stars. What i mean is xbows shoot very quickly but they dont deal such a big amount of damage per second. Against small troops like goblins or archers it is usefull but against a pekka, a golem, a giant, hogs or the king and queen not much, which are the troops we mainly use in wars.
And also since i started th9 ive only been in a war and i got 6 stars. Im number 4 in my clan and i was able to 3 star my equal, which was a th9 with xbows, lvl10 canons, lvl10 arch towers, lvl6 wiz towers, etc with a jellyfish type base. And i also 3 starred number 5 which was a th8.5. We won the war 28 to 15 in a 10vs10 war ,where only their number 1 and 3 where 2 starred, the rest where 3 starred. We are 5 th9 in my clan and 4 of us just reached th9 in this last month, so it isnt that difficult.Quote:

I think the difference here is context. All these upgrade ideas only make sense if they are appropriate to the larger picture of your war. For us the TH8/9 boundary is just below half way down our list - so attacking there is only about 3* - it's 3* or fail; there is no other result. If this is all happening near the top of your list, then the expectations are different.
Or if it's right at the bottom (as in Fully's post above) of a clan with a whole load of TH9s and TH10s then it's not surprising if any 8.5s match against 9s - there will be a lot of potential matches out there with a TH9+ recruitment policy

It may as well be an entirely different game since the goal is completely different.
They want the safety of known, spam attacks for 2, and to worry only about ¾ of any given base, regardless it being .5 or not. They want high-fives for 2-star attacks and probably think xbows can stop barch. Hell, some folks told me this while complaining that I wouldn't place my xbows. FOOLS, I SAY!
Essentially, 8.5 is for warriors who understand weighting and want to be perfecting 3-star attacks. While it CAN overly used there are principles at play that will just go over most clashers' heads. Just El Oh El at those folks and keep at it.
always offense over defense, i guarantee all the complainers war logs are trash. give up 3 stars get 6. what is so hard to figure out?

Their are different breeds of this strategy.
I personally did it as a Th8. I maxed offense before doing much with defense.
I hit Air Defenses (damn dragons) and then focused on offense. As my offense got up to snuff I did teslas, then wizard towers - either long or very useful upgrades.
But once I could hit the typical Th8, I dropped the strategy and upgraded everything. (I didn't think golems level 2 would dramatically change my 3 star ratio).
I think its a good way to transition until you get to that point where you have the fire power to hit another maxed base of your level - once you do - upgrade those defenses! They do matter
I don't see how building xbows but keeping them lvl1 makes any sense at all, whatsoever. Level 1 xbows have a very high weight and pretty much suck in actual use.Quote:

I think there is some value in it if you war a lot. I'm doing a hybrid TH9.75 now (everything but the new xbow) and it has helped a lot. We get some slightly unfair matchups in war, but it's clear that my matchups are easier since I have low level xbows an am missing my other one.
for TH8.5 I always recommend adding the air defense. that's a game changer for war defenses.
Max loons, and queen are super nice to have. Really helps. I did it and recommend ppl do it. I also farm up high where shields are easy and people will take a TH pop instead of wiping you most of the time, so defending from raids was not a huge factor.
I'm probably too late in this thread to actually contribute anything to the discussion, but I did some experimenting with 8.5 these last 3 weeks, and I can tell you that it doesn't make a difference whatsoever. Keep in mind I wasn't maxed TH8 - I still had some pink walls, not a single skull wall, and a lot of my troops still needed upgrading.
First, I started into TH9 with just getting my spell factory upgraded and put my AQ down. The first matchup I got was a maxed TH8 who rushed to TH10 with all towers except infernos. Even though it was rushed, his base still had more DPS and HP than I could reasonably handle within 3 mins. Not being particularly happy about the matchup, I decided I'd give it another shot, and if I get an unfavorable matchup again, I'm going to put my other towers down. I got matched with a new-ish TH9 this time, but he had all towers down and upgraded to TH8 levels. A little easier to deal with, but still unfavorable.
I decided it was time to throw down everything I could except the xbows to see how that affected my matchups. It made no difference - I was still getting paired up with either rushed TH10s or TH9s that were at least somewhat ahead of me. At the same time, my base was desperately needing those Xbows to counter the AQs I was now having to deal with to try and keep my opponent from 2-starring me. I said screw it, and I put both Xbows down.
It made no difference. Exact same kinds of matchups, except now, I was defending better. I kept note of my "war weight" throughout the process, and before going to TH9, I was at 58. After going to TH9 with AQ and Spells, I was at 60. After putting all towers and xbows down, I'm at 62. My opponents through the entire process have been 62-66.
I see no benefit in this whole x.5 thing. You are an easy target for farming and an easy target in high level wars. :facepalm:
You would have to be in a clan with everyone x.5 for it to work out...
people can say what they want, but you need to consider that war match making in a whole is based on the composition of a clan. If 1 person does 8.5, it may not sway that much in your favor. But if you have a decent amount of people attempting the strategy will yield much better results.
I'm another who see the .5 thing as a waste of time especially 8.5. I expect my th8's to 3 star all other th8's and if they can't my th9's will do it on clean up.
I think there are different views on what constitutes an 8.5.
I started with spell factory, army camps, cc, lab first. Loons were my first upgrade and I dropped the xbows about the time they finished (so 2 weeks into th9).
Until that time I was a th8 with an AQ on offense so I was in no rush to drop the heavily weighted xbows and I don't feel bad or cowardly about that. I just made sure my defense didn't outpace my offense
Some people go basically full lavas lvl 20 queen before dropping anything and I think that falls more into the gaming the system (or cowardice) when it is done to those extreme levels.
The benefit is a much more prepared offensive for the TH9 world ahead of you. You will have a better chance of finishing your heroes earlier by the time your base is maxed.Quote:

In war, if you get 3-starred, that shouldn't really matter at most. Most TH8s are 3-starred during wars, why does it matter if you're 3-starred and still have the weight of a TH8? Besides, trading in on being 3-starred for 6-stars earned from attacking in war is much better then being 2 starred as a new TH9 with xbows but getting only 0-1 stars from attacking.

How I think it works
Start cc lab camp aq new traps new walls etc asap. Don't drop new defenses or xbows. Wait until u get 220 camps and maybe max hogs or loons or until u get some th9 lvl war troops. Then start new defenses.
What I actually did because I think th8.5 is silly. Yes I tske war seriously.
Dropped cc lab spell aq new walls new def (sans xbows). Got my camps and farming troops asap. Once I hit 210 capacity and cc finished I rejoined war. I was still able to 3 star similar th9s. (Sat out for about 1.5 weeks) . I dropped xbows within the first two weeks of th9... didn't hurt our war matchup... still 3 starring any th9 I was asked to. (Usually I would get the bottom one and then clean the top th8 if needed, as I was the bottom th9 at that time). After catching up new defenses I did all traps and other misc buildings along with pushing to champs and rushing xbows to lvl 3 (xbows didn't help any on defenses up there) all the while cranking out war troop upgrades. By the time I was ready to start any th9 lvl defenses (besides cannons) I had max hogs max loons golems lvl 4 hounds witches lvl 1.
TLDR: as long as you keep your offense above your defense you will do fine in war.

Nothing cowardly about it! If you want to keep warring and not sit out of war for 2 months the best way is to do 8.5! As it takes easily about 2 months to get a decent TH9 base ready to fight equals in war!

Because for some people the primary focus of the game is war. You can keep the builders going for a little while since they have to do the camps, drills, spell factory, lab, CC, traps, probably new AD, new gold storage, new elixir storage, archer queen, dark spell factory, both dark barracks, and upgrade DE storage. Some people do choose to take it to an extreme and practically live at 8.5 when they have everything else finished and have made significant offensive progress, but I don't think that was the original intention or the main point of it.

Personally I'm going to build the XBOWS ASAP at TH9 because they are good to protect against farming attacks and loot raids.
