My experience with govalo
I would like to share my experience using govalo at th9. First off I'm learning 3 star strategies at the moment and rarely 3 star at this point in time, but I am hoping to be more consistent in the future.
Just to repeat, I'm not an expert, just sharing my experience!
Thing with th9 is it's laughably easy to get that 2 star, you don't need a full army to do it. This includes gowiwi, gowipe, and gowiva. These kind of attacks I find often die out as soon as troops try to leave the core and start banging on a wall (leaving them with a 2 star). I've seen raids where people use a 2nd jump with success however I've haven't had any experience with that. Instead my approach is to take as little troops as you need to clear the core and get the 2 star, and then use back end hogs and balloons to finish off the base for 3 stars. Back end loons is for bases that you can get all the air defences down with the ground portion of the army (often for bases where they put all 4 air defences in the core).
I will admit I've used govalo only 4 times so far, and have come close to 3 starring 3 out of 4 times/ Personally the reason I prefer valks than pekkas is because they are split into smaller housing space units. Imagine a valk as 1/3 of a pekka. This means 2 things, splash healing or damage is going to have a greater effect on them. At th9 this helps more than it hurts since heal spells are 3 times more effective on valks than on pekkas, and heal spells can easily negate the effects of splash damage.
2 out of the 4 times I almost got a 3 star, were due to bad deployment / not enough back end balloons. The valks themselves did their duty, they cleaned the core with many valks to spare but died off as soon as they tried to leave the core. The back end balloons were deployed at non air targeting defences which was inefficient and they failed to take all of the back end defences out.
The 3rd time I brought less valks, and 16 back end balloons as opposed to 12. The reason I made that adjustment was because the archer towers / teslas were behind cannons so I couldn't specifically target those first. Firstly with that raid I misplaced a heal and missed king ability which didn't help. Even though the valks did their duty in cleaning the core, I was relying on them to tank the archer towers for the back end balloons. If I had correctly placed the heal and used the king ability would have kept those valks alive for a little longer providing that little bit more tanking for my back end balloons, which may have allowed my back end balloons to take out the last couple of defences for the 3 star, instead I ended up with an 86% 2 star. The other thing that would have helped me is a slightly better timing on those back end balloons allowing the valks to provide better tanking.
For the 4th time, the valks split, about 1/3 of my valks went into the core and about 2/3 went walkies. The split happened because the enemy archer queen was luring my valks to the core, but she died before all the valks had gone in. A combination of a late deployment of my valks, and not allowing for this with my jump spell placement resulted in the buildings in the core not being closest to my valks (resulting in 2/3 of them going walkies). The problem when they split is that your spells will only affect one group as opposed to both groups. The 1/3 of my valks failed to destroy the core, and the other group of valks decided to target a wall unnecessarily to make things worse (think this might be caused by the fact that they go in between buildings screwing with the distance calculations.
Here is what I've learned from the 4 raids so others can copy what went well, and avoid repeating what didn't.
1) Don't take too many valks, you need just enough to clear the core, no more.
2) I prefer to use 2 golems, for me that provides a decent amount of tanking for the archer queen and the wizards.
3) I don't use the golems to tank for the valks like people were talking about, I use the golems, valks, and king all to tank for the wizards (mostly for funneling, these will eventually get splashed up / hit a giant bomb) and the archer queen (deals with drags in the cc, does lots of damage to the base from afar for much longer than the wizards, and even better if you can get her to survive for cleanup).
4) Don't bring too many initial wizards, just enough to funnel.
5) Target the back end balloons on the archer towers and possible tesla locations as priority (not doing this resulted in many of my raids failing.)
6) Heal and rage the valks in the core (I use 2 heals, 1 rage, 1 jump), don't worry about dropping a heal and a rage in the same spot, unlike hogs they're not going to run out of your heal spell since big hp buildings in the core such as the th occupy them.
7) Have a proper plan for the timing of the valks and the funneling to ensure they go into the core.
8) Watch Jake's video about how to kill a dragon in the cc, you want to ensure the queen targets it. Drag / balloons can wreck valks if left alive.
9) Bring a few cleanup troops like spare wizards, minions or goblins for use one the defences are gone. If you're queen / valks die off then they'll be espeically important. I don't have any personal experience with this one in a govalo, but I have made many goho raids fail at around 80% due to lack of cleanup troops, and some clutch raids which would have failed had I not brought the cleanup wiz.
10) Hit your fricken king ability, and don't misplace your heals. (Queen ability is probably even more important, but I haven't forgotten that one yet with a govalo, there's a first time for everything though right?)
