I want to upgrade some of my troops to at least level 5,but I don't know which one is the best one to upgrade first. I like using goblins to collect loot,but I also like using balloons to take down defenses. Any suggestions?

I personally would upgrade archers first any TH i upgrade to. But if you use balloons a lot I suggest you upgrade them, I think you should hold off on your goblins till you get some other tier 1 troops upgraded firstQuote:

wizards get a huge boost at lvl 5 and rightly so because you cannot upgrade them again until TH10. But of course I'd get barbs/archers up first so you can farm fellow TH8 better, then wizards
Level 5 pekkas are great
Looting is the food and water dude....Buildings have been buffed so make your barch troops stronger...
Level 5 wizards are amazing. Archers would probably be the best investment though. Don't forget barbs, they are incredibly useful too.
I always focused on basic farming troops frist, always started with Archers.
Next I'd go for meatshield (giants or barbarians, depending on prefered farming composition).
as Holps said, no farming, no process.
Since matchmaking changed and loot related to town hall difference, you will mostly see bases kinda equal to you, you will need the stronger farming troops.
for war reason you may should go for wizards pretty soon, also rage and heal spells, since most successful strategies using them.
At T8 it's basicly about Hogs, Dragons or Pekka, focus prefered attacking strategy first.
With Golem upgrade you can wait pretty long, level 1 is still for maxed T8 good enough.
