Tap the Lab > Tap Research > Upper right there will be a Gem icon indicating how many it will take to finish the upgrade.

yeah to check the exact number if you tap the lab and then in the right corner it will say "Finish Upgrade: (Number)" That number is the amount of gems needed :)
