I have been looking at the cumlative costs of Townhouse 9 and 10, and since I am 80% maxed at TH8, I am considering just to stop leveling at this point and not upgrade to TH9.
I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on gems to progress any further.
What are your thoughts on this? Is it just too expensive to continue upgrading further?

I'm not saying you should get 75% lava walls in 4 months but ... :smirk:
Costs in terms of time spent on the game - this is another story. I think you'll need much more free time to play to farm all defences + 2 level of walls + 2 heroes.
This is concerning me too since I'm starting University in roughly 2 months (which is about the time I'll get to mid-max TH8). Not sure how much time I'll have to focus on playing/farming. I'll really think twice and many more times before going to TH9. I'll likely won't (for quite a while)
You don't need to buy gems to progress in TH9. The upgrades aren't as expensive as you might believe and just raiding a couple times a day successfully will still get you buy. Max out your gold and elixir when you're upgrading to TH9 so that when the upgrade finishes you can bang out a couple of upgrades right then and there.
So you don't want to progress anymore, because it will be too hard to progress. Either way you won't be progressing lol.
TH9 was easy and one of the best TH levels, what are you going to do, stop playing?? You don't have to max out TH9 in a month. Staying at TH8, doing nothing is umm ridiculous? The only thing you will be tempted to spend gems on are heroes. You don't sound like you war much, so that won't effect you. Spending gems, is for the people who don't want to wait.
Don't look at the total you need to upgrade everything. Upgrade a few things at a time, no need to get overwhelmed.
You don't ever have to spend money on this game unless you want to. The WORST case scenario is that your progress slows down (and that's mainly for casual players). But is that really worse than stopping it altogether? Up to you to decide.
That being said, most people make the transition perfectly fine. Yes, costs rise, but if you play a couple hours a day (or more), you'll have no trouble. And even if you don't play much, you probsbly won't find yourself grinding to a standstill. Plus at TH 9 and 10 there are plenty of exciting additions (AQ, infernos, etc.) that should be enough to hold your interest. It's really not that bad, and it's certainly not worth quitting over until you try it IMO.
It's not a bad idea. Th9 does require 10x the time/commitment that th8 does. You'll miss out on lavahound based attacks and the best single thing in the game, the archer queen (even though she can act ♥♥♥♥♥♥ed a lot of times).
You can still do MOST of the interesting stuff though at th8 and in some ways it's more fun to do it at th8 rather than th9. I created a second account which im keeping at th8 for this reason. I recommend checking out the Elite 8 series on the Onehive Raids youtube channel to see what's possible at th8.
You dont have to spend alot of money. There are alot of people that dont spend a dime outside of the 5th builder.
If I were you I would at least go to town hall 9. I'm planning to. The costs do seem like a lot but you can do it at your own pace. No need to get to max town hall 9 as fast as you can. Your not a huge trophy pusher are you? If you are then don't expect to get into champs or Titans as th8. If you don't care about pushing you could always just do th8.5 and not progress your base from their. That way if you farm elixer for troop upgrades you can have still have fun with a th9 offense and clan war army diversity. You will still get drawn with th8's as your opposite number so it will help you if you enjoy wars. In my opinion costs always look worse before your actually at that point or a little bit past that point. 2 million and up elixer upgrades used to look hard to do and really expensive but now their really not. Also theirs no need to spend tons of money on gems to max town hall 9. Tons of people have and are doing it right now.Quote:

I think its a great idea! Moves like this one helps to stimulate the economy; builders go to sleep, storages become filled, TH9 comes along and takes it all, I come along and take it from the TH9. More people should consider doing this. :thumbsup:Quote:

I am sure people have done it without gems, but I can see why SuperCell makes billions of dollars.
It's not that I don't want to play the game, I am just wondering how long it would take me to max TH9 from 8 if I am not spending any money on this game. Im an almost maxed TH9. Ive got a few hero levels to go and 2 lab items- new dark spells- to go. Ive spent a grand total of $20 on the game. Its possible to get there OP it just takes time, patience and the ability to change it up when things get stale. I will admit TH9 is a grind at times but I think we all knew that to begin with.
