Offense first
Don't listen to the people saying offense before defence. You can do them both at the same time! Taking the TH8.5 route is a stupid idea, especially when you don't care about war! You should upgrade your farming troops first, and remember that giants get a huge buff at level 6, as do most other troops. If you're a barcher, do that first. You'll also want to get Hogs level 5 to start picking off TH8s easier. Let your leader know you won't be ready to attack TH9s for atleast a month. Then, you can focus on golems and witches etc.
On defence, you should do both xbows straight away. Have 6 million gold stored up (and hopefully a full CC!) and then spend 3 million on one xbow, build all the other new defences, then collect war loot and do the second xbow. If not, wait a few days to do the second xbow whenever you can. As always, do lab and spell factory ASAP, and start the army camps as these give you a huge advantage; but one at a time so you're not wasting builders.
Once you've reached the stage where your new defences are of TH8 level, start to upgrade mortars, air defences and wizard towers, one at a time. Never upgrade more than one of each structure at a time. Get the CC to level 5 ASAP as this gives you the 30 space allowing you to hold a lava hound for defence in war, and take max golems to war too. Remember to not neglect your teslas, and do them too, even though they do take a long time.
As always, be doing your walls along the way, as much as you can. You have to spend 1 billion gold/elixir on walls at TH9, so be patient.
If you ever have enough DE to upgrade heroes, do so, even if you're in war. Make sure you have a full DE storage and take the AQ straight to level 2!
