Reasons for protecting or not protecting your town hall.

See end of post for the question I'm asking.

So the standard advice for farmers is to leave the town hall outside to try to get a free shield.

Personally I leave it outside because I don't want to waste valuable space on the inside of my base on my town hall. I mean the free shield is nice, but it's not the main reason why. Although when I'm high on de (more than 35-40k meaning I'm offering max amount) I usually run my th out farming base becuase it does a good job of limiting the number of storages people can get at the cost of the de being relatively easy to get (only requires about 35% destruction with tight funneling and jump spell), but if they get my de then worst case they only get 4 of my storages. When I get less de I run a base with my th inside to try to get defenses for the achievement

1st question:
Why do you guys leave or not leave your town hall outside? This mainly applies to the lower leagues. I understand the value of the free shield if you are pushing etc.

2nd question:
Ok now ignore the fact that you get a shield for getting sniped. Would you agree that it's a waste of valuable inside wall space to bring th inside? If you don't care about trophies that is.

For reference I'm a mid th9.

Any base can be at least two stared by a good player. I have saved a bundle leaving my th outside. Many hungry snipers out there:)

The only way to do it when farming, TH out and totally free to get as many free shields as possible.

True. I've done it when I went to champs. But I'm specifically talking about in lower leagues when u see weaker raiding comps. Mainly gibarch at this point by th10s. And occasionally the dumb th9.

This and plus you get no league bonus for winning a defense.

Town hall in if I'm only going to log out for a short period of time.

Town hall out if I'm logging out for a longer period of time and don't want my collectors to fill up enough to be worth hitting.

I'm a new TH 8 and the only time so far I have trophy pushed was to get the 250 gems/unlock addtional builder gained at 1250 trophies. Otherwise I'm only interested in gaining resources to upgrade my base so I leave the TH outside leaving me the option to make use of any free shields or cancel them by attacking. Unless I'm missing something a TH only snipe costs me less than 10 shields which at the league level I'm at I can easily gain by raiding lower TH level bases or even snipe someone elses unprotected TH. Obviously at higher levels the situation may be different. CoC is about give and take. The first time a raider used a giant horde and healer I thought WOW. Now I do it to others.

I generally do the same.

I'm one of those dumb TH9s using Giant/Archer comp in Crystal III against mid level TH9s. It has been very lucrative for me, but boy am I dumb.

Anyway, I leave my TH outside because 19/20 raids against me are TH snipes. I'm currently finishing lab upgrades before moving up a TH. I don't know how successful attackers would be if I put my TH inside, for now though, I'm happy with keeping my loot and giving up a few trophies. After a little raiding, I have to drop a few trophies to stay in CIII. It seems that CII is a desert for me when it comes to loot.

Ya c2 is dry dry dry. Anyways what I mean by dumb is they spend about 100k elixir on an army. Use 2 to 3 spells and their heroes. And they get 4 to 6 of my storages in a really good attack usually tjey get 2 to 4 though. I don't get it. Their profit is relatively low. There are plenty of th8s offering similar amounts which require only 1 spell for me and my queen stays untouched.

Also I'm mainly asking people in low enough leaguess that the loot bonus is negligible.

Admittedly in higher leagues, but mine stays outside so that I don't get attacked. I just checked and I have one genuine defence in my entire log, the rest are snipes - and that's relatively bad for me, it's often all snipes. And I'm always offering 2500 dark and often max gold and elix too.

I would also turn it around and ask why you would ever want to put TH in? (unless pushing at high trophies with a max-TH10 base). Certainly for anyone farming every defence win is a disaster - you always lose some loot, have to reset traps and then get attacked again right away.

Well personally I'm trying to get defenses for the achievement so a couple hundred k loot lost is nbd. Also people get over 37% on most of my defenses so I usually get the 40% shield on a defense

Unless you are in a war there is absolutely no reason to protect you Town hall. Its a free shield, everyone in the game benefits from it being out and your loot more often than not gets protected. Wasted walls. Anyone that protects their th is missing a few cards from the deck if you know what I mean..

I always leave my TH out except for my war base obviously. I pretty much stay shielded all the time when I'm not logged in. I rarely get a real attack. 99% of the time people just snipe my TH.

I always leave mine out. I have no idea how much in resources this has saved me but I'm guessing a lot.

As far as the TH taking up too much space inside your base that is a double edged sword. The TH can actually soak up a good amount of hits giving your defenses a chance to take out more enemy troops keeping them away from your storage containers.

Well, unless they want the unbreakable achievement or or trying to get their trophy count up.

1) I leave my th outside at 3600 trophies. Why? Free shield, don't lose resources on defense. Defending rarely prevents a 2 star up here

2) Depends on your goal. My mini account has a TH8 war base with a non-centralized Th. I have it like the 2nd layer. Why? Because I WILL get 2 star. So I want to give that valuable real-estate to other structures. I still defend it because it has the highest HP of any building I have. So I want my defenses firing on units as its attacked but otherwise it has very little value.



I'd say about late Th9/and at Th10 defending your Th makes a much bigger difference. For Th9 its hard to decide if you want to put in the center or not, and for a Th10 you have a real chance at holding out the 2 star - so its worth it.


But not in regular raiding

There are only two reasons to have TH in. Firstly for unbreakable, secondly to climb the leagues quickly when on a trophy push. Fortunately the two can go hand in hand. Once unbreakable is done I will struggle to see the point though, but I'm a very long way from reaching that!

I'm with the majority on this one. I leave my town hall outside and untrapped about 95% of the time. The few cups I lose because of it is easily regained and it does allow me to better protect my resources by not having to make room for it in my base.

Like most I just leave my TH outside of my base easy shield and it protects my resources.

I leave my TH out at corner, hoping for a lucky snipe shield.
However, the higher I climb, sometimes they will go for 2nd star, even for an additional 1 trophy only.
Currently at 3700+ champ 2.

not only for pushers but for farmers too.

More protection for loot and hoping for an easy shield so no one raids all my loot.

I always leave my TH out regardless of league. I am usually carrying a fair bit of loot so the chance (however slim) that I get a free shield is always important to me.

I figure if you are pushing, you will require resources to push effectively, loot loss from being raided as well as reloading defences/traps is a drain your resources and can prematurely end your push unless you plan on gemming resources. On top of that when you are pushing as a th9 once you hit high crystal - masters your chances of getting sniped for 1 trophy from high masters-low champs is quite high.

If you leave your TH inside in those instances you are far more likely to get attacked, lose resources and probably lose more trophies since your attackers will probably TH10 barchers/All Archers/GiBarch or TH9 loonion/laloonion/GoWiPe in the same or lower league. Also people in higher leagues will skip your base (TH in) if it only gives them 1-3 trophies and they need to expend the majority of their force to get 1-2 trophies.

There is a trophy range around 3100-3400 that I have found where leaving the TH out can be hazardous since you will get TH9s in M3-M1 sniping your TH for 13+ trophies but that is preferable to them 2 starring you for 26+ trophies. But once you cross that 3400 barrier it seems you get sniped from higher champs/titans for 1 trophy.

IMO Its better to leave TH outside than inside :p

I leave mine out and surrounded by decorations.
Apart from getting a free shield, I want to prevent full on attacks because I don't want to pay to rearm my traps and xbows.

Having your TH outside is the safest option, but it only works for so long. If you have full storages, they will be attacked regardless

There are 2 situations in which it's better to have your TH inside :

1/ You are working on the unbreakable achievement
2/ Yo are rushing above 4k where you have a risk to get sniped for a high number of trophies.

Any other situation, better leaving TH out

I leave it outside because I can easily recover the trophy that I lose in a attack if needed and also because I really want all thoses th9 too hit it instead of fulling raiding my th8 base full of resources. Its becaming harder and harder too keep resources, as a th8 very well upgraded, from th9 attacks, especially if they come with guns blazing and a queen ;)

Indeed it is, I dont see any point at all too cover a th unless you are in a league that you want too stay no matter what.

These are not valid questions imo. The reason to put your town hall is that you want a free shield. So you can't just ignore this.
Furthermore, it would be very painful to see you being looted for a lot on an attack on which the enemy does not get 40% or a one-star town hall victory. This would mean you can be looted again by another enemy.
To still answer your 2nd question and ignore the fact that you get a shield (so assuming that a player must 50% a base to get a victory and won't get a victory by destroying your town hall): yes, it would be a waste of space, because you don't put your army camps inside your base also (for example).

To me it's a no brainer, more of a case of not why you leave TH outside but why leave it inside?! Free shield, snipers get their loot bonus. I'm Th9 farming in gold leagues, sitting on 60k+ DE with usually about 4 mil gold for upgrades and get attacked probably about once a week - win/win for me.
