Best and worst single upgrade

I get this question in clan chat a lot:

"I'm a premature 6-7-8-9 and I'm broke, I have all the buildings but they're all level 1. I have enough for one upgrade. What should I upgrade? If I upgrade my collector I'll be rich right?"

What would you guys say is the best single thing to upgrade?

Conversely, what would you say to avoid upgrading at all costs?

For me, I always give the same answer: always max out at least one barracks or at least get it to healer, and never, ever upgrade your collectors. Barracks means troops and troops means income and income means you don't need collectors.

For now, let's say just buildings or things a builder can do rather than troop levels.

As someone who didn't max before going to TH 10 the best thing you can do is build every building you can (except xbow and inferno, you can get those later). And every single wall. All at level 1. Then design your base. Then slowly upgrade everything. There is no bad upgrade but I'd say any order is ok as long as you do everything evenly.

You can let your generators lag a little if you raid a lot. And you don't have to upgrade the troops you don't use much till the end too. I don't raid that much so I maxed the generators a lit and it helps me a lit. (gold and elixir). And forget about anything DE till you have a decently upgraded base.

Best: Lab
Worst: Elixir pump/Dark barracks

I'm TH lvl 8, and I still cannot train PEKKAs - because I don't use them. Generally speaking when you have just upgraded your TH, I would do the upgrades in the following order -

Lab
Army camps
New defensive structures

Get your offence sorted first, and then your defence.

I'd go pumps and mines, helps alot. I think that's the best way. When the player has enough resources start making his/her troops upgrade via research and upgrading the army camps

Best:Mortars
worst: Dark Barracks

Best: Wizard towers
Worst: Dark Barracks

For prematures I'd go offense (lab/camps) first, gold mines second, splash defenses third.

Upgrades that can safely be put on the backburner are dark barracks, regular barracks if they're all at least L5, and ADs (hardly anyone uses dragons in farming ranges, other than revenges).

Don't upgrade collectors? At all, you say?

864k free resources per day is nothing to laugh at. You'll eventually reach a point where the mouth-wateringly-low cost of upgrading collectors is a long-gone dream. The cheapest thing I can upgrade any more is 1.5 million coins - enjoy it while you can.
