Army: BAM is the best for you. There's nothing effective that trains faster than BAM (the one army that trains faster, barbarian minion, doesn't work at all). More than anything, you need to be raiding very often. Keep in mind that boosting will get you a lot more resources. If you decide to boost, boost a barbarian barrack and an archer barrack, or boost all four elixir barracks. Boosting your dark barracks is unnecessary.
On to your main questions. The key to getting good loot is patience when nexting. Sometimes, you're gonna get great loot in less than 5 nexts. If that's happening frequently, great! You're very lucky and getting great loot. However, in reality, you have to be prepared to next a lot. A week or two ago, I recorded number of nexts for 107 raids. My average was somewhere around 29 nexts. Some raids were found on the first village that came up. Others took 100+ (though that was rare). I even got one after 130 nexts. In general, if you're nexting too much to find every raid, you need to change your trophy range slightly, by maybe 100-200 trophies. After some practice doing this, it becomes natural and you'll get pretty good at judging the loot situation and deciding what to do.
When looking for a raid, when I was at TH8, and also right now at TH9, I only attack bases that have 200k+ Gold and 200k+ elixir that I can get. If a village has 500k of each but you can't get to it, no point in raiding. For this, you need to be able to tell where the loot is--collectors or storages. It's fairly easy to tell: just look at either the village's elixir collectors. If it looks half full or more, there's a good deal in them. If they're completely full, you've hit a jackpot! I usually only go for "collector raids", where all or most of the loot is in collectors. Storage raids take more deployment skill, and I don't claim to be a pro at that :). Like before, you will get good at telling where the loot is and deciding whether to attack or not as you practice and get more experience.
Time of day is one of the most important things to pay attention to when farming. It's almost as important as your army and trophy range. Here are the best times to farm:
3:00 PM - 5:00 PM EST (GMT -5:00)
8:00 PM - 11:00 PM EST (GMT -5:00)
3:00 AM - 5:00 AM (GMT -5:00) *BEST*
Those are the best times (the last one is the bestest :D), but that's not to say you won't find loot at other times. The only time you should specifically try not to raid at or have a raiding session during is 7:00 AM - 1:00 PM EST (GMT -5:00). Since you said you can raid anytime, try the 3AM-5AM (GMT -5:00) and you'll get great loot.
Good luck, and as I've said multiple times throughout this post, you'll get better as you go along. It'll be a grind at first, trying to figure everything out, but a month from now, you'll be a pro and you can help me out on this thread :)
