Hey guys! This idea is something that I've been thinking about for a while now. I brought it up with my clan mates and they all seemed to like the idea as well so I've decided to share and see if it can get some legs.
The motivation for the idea stems from my playing experience as well as some of the experiences of others that have been playing with me over the months. I've almost maxed out my th8 base and I have to say that playing through th6 and th8 have been a blast! However, I find that there is a bit of a lull during th7 due to it being dominated by Dragon attacks. The dominance of the Dragons makes it near impossible to defend and makes war attacks almost trivial. I saw it back when I was a th7 and I see it now with the members in our clan that are th7. Our wars are th9-th7 and the th7 bases are always guaranteed stars even without higher town hall members dropping down to attack them. For th6 and th8+ war attacks (I'm talking one th6 attacking another th6/one th8 attacking another th8), everything needs to be well thought out to defeat the base, whereas for a th7 attacking another th7, 3 Lightning+10 Dragons can pretty much guarantee 3 stars without much strategic thought going into the attack. As well, the ground game is almost non-existent for th7 attackers attacking their peer th7 bases in wars.
With this motivation behind, my idea is as follows:
As it is right now, th6 players upgrading to th7 receive 2 new cannons and 1 new air defense (among the other new buildings) once their town hall is upgraded.
My idea is to have th6 players upgrading to th7 receive 1 new cannon and 2 new air defense instead, with all of the other new buildings remaining the same as it is. Then when upgrading to th8, players will then get the cannon that was removed from th7 and no new air defense thus th8 remains exactly as it is now.
It is essentially a 1 for 1 defense structure swap that will make players plan out their Dragon attacks more carefully due to the presence of an extra air defense and will make the dragon attacks less automatic. So there's no need to change the number of walls available or anything like that, there will be the same wall space available for the same number of defensive buildings as there is now.
To go along with this, another suggestion would be to make Valkyries (level 1 only) available at th7. Since the ground game is not very prominent for th7 war attacks and Valks are an under-used troop offensively, this would be a step in increasing their use. If the change is made to have an extra air defense and 1 less cannon, I can see Valkyries with Heal/Rage/Wizards become a more popular option for th7 attackers since Dragon attacks will be more difficult and since Giants+Wizards aren't quite strong enough yet at level 4 to consistenly take down a th7 base completely.
Final thing that I've thought about concerning this idea:
let's say that hypothetically the game developers decide to implement this, current th7 bases that have already bought both new cannons would need to be altered retroactively. It would be unfair to players to remove one of their cannons and have them buy a new air defense; it would be a waste of their gold and upgrade time. For th7, cannons are capped at level 8 and air defense are capped at level 5, so I thought of the following rough proposal to change bases retroactively:
if a th7 player has:
a level 1 or level 2 cannon --> replaced by a level 1 air defense
a level 3 or level 4 cannon --> replaced by a level 2 air defense
a level 5 or level 6 cannon --> replaced by a level 3 air defense
a level 7 cannon --> replaced by a level 4 air defense
a level 8 cannon --> replaced by a level 5 air defense
