It's an awesome meat shield for the core.. Attackers get stuck on the the x-bows, where they either die or run out of time to take the DE storage.

I say it's due to their range and hitpoints. Their speed can play a role as well.
if you do the math xbows do wayyyyyy more dps after a few seconds when an attack starts. dont beleive me google it. youll be shocked out how much more dps a max lvl xbow does then a max lvl at
People have already mentioned the most common reasons, but personally I keep mine in the core because of how many xbows I have.

My core can hold 3 xbows without a problem. 7 archer towers on the other hand would have been sweet to have centralized, but 3 xbows defending the front lines.. nah :smirk:

The answer you're looking for
XBOW's are valued higher than Archer Towers for nothing else but one simple reason.
Their "attack hit speed".
Why you ask? Because yes, mathematically the Archer Towers DPS is higher than the XBOW's, however the Archer Tower's "damage per hit" is higher than the XBOW's "damage per hit" and the "attack hit speed" of the Archer Tower is slower than that of the XBOW's (Though recently the difference has been reduced with the 2x arrow speed of Archer Towers; it is still slower than XBOW's post update.)
So what does this mean? This means that XBOW's exterminate "lower HP" faster than Archer Towers do, whether that be a "low HP troop" i.e. Tier 1 (BAM) or a high HP troop with not much HP remaining; i.e. a Balloon with 30 HP remaining.
How this makes a difference: It means that the army is depleted quicker by an XBOW than an Archer Tower, making a big difference not just to Barch but attacks with tanks too.
An example: A standard Balloonion attack, a group of 5 Balloons with low HP are making their way over to a defence, an XBOW firing at the group would take down the loons faster as the health is reduced gradually rather than suddenly, meaning the XBOW will retarget another Balloon faster than if an Archer Tower hits a Balloon for more damage than the remaining HP, taking longer to target the next Balloon, in which time those milliseconds make the difference of a defence being taken down by the group or not.
Example continued: The same applies with a group of 10 minions for example, XBOW will reduce the smaller HP faster than an Archer tower would because the XBOW will target another minion and start firing (less painful bullets - but faster) and reduces the HP quicker than an Archer Tower firing (heavier hitting bullets - more painful - but slower) meaning the Archer tower takes longer to retarget another minion.
This is because of the damage potential and the damage received: Say if a minion has 45 HP and the Archer Tower's arrow hits it for 30 damage per hit, it will reduce this minion's remaining HP to 15 HP, meaning the Archer Tower has to waste time (some of its DPS) firing a second arrow at the minion to reduce the HP still hitting it for 30 damage, causing the minions health to drop to 0 (actually -15) meanwhile in the same time the XBOW firing a bullet that hits for 15 HP killed that one minion in 3 hits and rather than wasting -15 HP of potential damage on a dead minion, it does that 15 HP damage on another one, retargeting the second one faster thus overall bringing the army down more swiftly - same goes for any troop just using minion as an example, same explanation effectively works on a group of 5 Balloons all with 45 HP remaining, however in that situation it is even more important because that would be the difference between a higher number of balloons being able to get their hits completed before they die, thus doing more damage overall.

I always have my xbows on ground. With all air targeting defenses maxed (except the 2nd air sweeper) but walls mixed lego, skull and purple there are not many air attackers. The range is the real advantage because all 3 start hammering on the golems after they get deployed onto the first wall. This brings the attacker under preassure because he has less time for cleanup which ends up loosing most of his wizards/pekkas in my first distraction ring.
Pekkas can't 1 shot x-bows.
Purely because of the high HP and the insane range.
