Another vote for the Air 2. I love it on mine. I've also got an older Mini and the bigger screen of the full size is a much better experience.
If you wanna play for long sessions my recommendation is ipad mini.
It's the best to hold using two hand and it's almost weightless.
I have been using iPad mini 1 for more than a year and it's perfect and I am thinking of getting iPad mini 2 or 3, but, not now.
Of course iPad Air 1,2 are also weightless maybe more than ipad mini. They are the best for for attaking especially in wars.

Getting an iPad Air 2 runs the game smooth as silk. Battery life is great and the device itself is very light. Can't think of a single complaint with it. The only consideration and I don't know the answer to this but if you are coming from an Android device, can you move your account to Apple Game Center?
Pretty sure you shouldn't really buy a new device specifically for CoC since it isn't a really hungry game.
As most people have said, you can't beat iPad in terms of tablets and since Clash was originally built for iPad it just has many advantages over Android. Good luck with the tablet hunt :D
