Just get a recording app or a device that has record screen as a built in function, upload it to youtube and voila you have it stored for ages and you can share with your clan mates and friends. And you aren't limited to 5.

There is another reason than "server overload"
Replay file contains The time the troop got deployed and how many troops etc
And it emulates the battle based by the AI right?
However AI of the troops changed daily in the maintenance break which would corrupt the replay
The AI runs on the client and is updated whenever there is a patch. Replays will work as long as the client stays the same.
Im making a presumption here, but one that it think is fair. I sincerely doubt that SC has multiple data centers and runs their own servers. Wherever the game actually lives, there are storage, compute, and data transit fees involved. Storing more replays costs more money. Server overload is code for costs too much.
(Update - confirmed that SC games run on Amazon Web Services - but you all probably already knew that)
Why not save the replays on the device instead of a database?
Btw the problem of the AI persist..
