If anything, the derby has brought our neighborhood closer together. We laugh and joke and we play hard, but nobody is harassing anybody about their play style. I'm sorry so many on this forum are having such difficulty, but it's not universal.
I do miss 1 thing from the old days. back in the old days you needed someone to fall in love with you....you did it yourself. You didn't need no black magic specialist to help you out.
The "good old days" differ depending on when we started playing. When I started Hay Day in its sixth month the thing that most impressed me about the game was the encouragement of kindness and being helpful...back then, anonymously. It seemed to me a beautiful concept to create a world where nothing is harmed and people were exemplifying the gentler traits of humankind to fulfill the structure of the game.
Since then the game has changed a lot. Many players got upset when the boat leaderboard was introduced, sure that the element of competition would ruin the gentle nature of the game. It did not. Many players got upset about the prospect of neighborhoods, partly because at the time you couldn't ask your current "neighbors", but also because of the element of exclusivity it added to the game. Some, including me, thought neighborhoods would ruin the game. They didn't.
Now we have a more challenging game addition because we are in neighborhoods, many of us very happily, and find our groups divided as to how much derby participation is desirable. Utopia - we all want the same thing be it intense competition in the derby, or at the opposite end, no participation at all. But a glance at the forum reveals many of us are struggling to find our way. Some are called upon to face the painful prospect of leaving a familiar and appreciated neighborhood, and long term friends, to find a nh that fits their amended playing style. For some, this has been a hurtful situation. I hope sc will do what it can to soften this transition.
So, do I miss the old Hay Day? Sure. Back then I was enamored. I was head over heels addicted. I couldn't play enough! I couldn't be on the forum enough. I embraced the beauty of the game. I was mesmerized! And, it was a kinder game. I miss that.
But I wouldn't go back. Through our neighborhood (and on the forum) I have had the privilege of getting to know people, wonderful, fine people i never would have met had it not been for the ever expanding Hay Day. My life has been enriched immeasurably, I have learned by example the meaning of true generosity. I have witnessed acts of kindness, moments of angst, and through it all come to admire the character and strength of the hay day players i get to call neighbors and friends. How incredibly cool!

It depends on how you felt about the good ol days. The nhs have expanded chat, thus making it more entertaining. But as hd has grown, so has the greed. The derby is a clear indicator of that. NHs are spending diamonds on extra tasks just to win. If thats your drive, i applaud you in your determination. From the forum and my own nh experiences, i have seen the true nature in people, the lack of disrespect for everyones real life and real commitments in the pursuit of a trophy. SC knows we will all continue to play, and spend money no matter how hard we stomp our feet and hold our breath about decorations now costing diamonds instead of coins. Me, im taking it back to the old school. Decorate my farm (my pride and joy !), banter and laugh with my peeps, try our best to do well in the derby, but always remember. ....it is a game we love, our retreat. Dont lose sight of why you really play :)
Well said, Willow. It was a gentler time, and I do miss that. I really hate all this competitive derby nonsense and the disharmony it has brought. I yearn for the days when it was all sweetness and fun.
Delightful post Willow!
I would say I miss being able to load my barn with 500 eggs in a very short time during a Visitor Event.
I miss having so many machines and crops yet to unlock.
I miss being able to move up a level or so in a day. At level 85 it now takes me usually weeks to move up a level.
But so much has been added! That its that much better now.
I don't enjoy the ducks or the town so much. And that's one thing that hasn't changed about Hay Day. I can still play my game my way.
I would say the Derby is what you make it.
I can still play it my way. And any person or group of people who might be trying to change my style of play to suit their drama or desires isn't worth my time.
This morning I was all excited again because it's Derby Day!
and we have been happily checking the task board to find tasks that we enjoy doing.
I have been clearing stuff out of my barn that I had stored for the double XP truck event and while I'm putting it in my shop I'm thinking some people can really use this stuff to complete their boat, truck or town tasks.
And as I am seeing a few NHs keeping up with us in this Derby I feel happy because we are playing with others who enjoy the Derby too.
Whether they are in for a no holds barred or a friendly competition or just-want-to-get-horseshoes doesn't really matter to me. I don't care who wins.
I rather enjoy the changes this year. I have not had the same experience as many, who stress over the derby. As co-leader, I trash low point (<150) tasks a couple times a day, and pick tasks that I enjoy doing. Some weeks we place top 3, and some we don't. Not a big deal to me.
I also like the added neighborhoods, makes it easier for me to find people to help to get thank you letters.
I also do not remember a time when the DD was diverse in its offerings, or plentiful with EMs. It does seem a little worse now, though, so I guess I miss that much at least.
Let's see if I remember the good ol'days ...
A Daily Dirt lacking in diversity, check. Back then it was eggs, eggs, B&E, wheat, B&E, eggs, indigo, repeat as needed.
Scarce expansion materials, check. Eggs, eggs, B&E, wheat, eggs, TAPE!!! ... too late :(. Eggs, eggs, wheat, B&E, etc.
Communication issues, check. These were solved with creative use of farm names: "Sushi in shop, [insert farm name here]" from a farm I followed (my boat needed it), to which I responded by changing my name to "Thank you, [insert farm name]" - I miss them :). I hope you can all remember a similar interaction. Of course, there were also farm names called "Help my boat!" filling the newspaper - most with no boat to help, only some with a "please" tacked on the end. And there were other interesting messages in farm names occasionally, like "Stop selling eggs!!!" which was so funny 'cause it was so true!
Fast forward to now and it looks a bit better:
The Daily Dirt still lacks diversity. It has fewer eggs, and I even buy them now (full price!) because we have demand for them. Wool and white sweaters abounded and were replaced (thank you gift shop) by maps (thank goodness that's over), milk and bacon are scarcer now (that's the pets for you), and now it's cloche hats and veggie dogs. Demand for animal products are much better balanced now and crops are more plentiful (wheat and indigo mostly) but we'll see what the next update brings.
Expansion materials are actually easier to come by thanks to pets and townies. They still drop unevenly (we all get caught in the random number generator trap - randomly is not evenly, unfortunately) but there's some help there too (or destruction of the newspaper, depending on your perspective) as we can now communicate beyond farm names with ...
Neighbourhoods! By far the biggest change to the farm since I began playing. Goodbye newspaper advertisements, hello cliques and massive increases of negative feelings (remind you of anything? hint, hint, *cough* derby) as "thieves" (formerly friendly followers/helpers) hit people's roadside shops. And then came neighbourhood chat - no more farm name messages now! We can actually speak to each other! And the neighbourhood reshuffle started. This group doesn't talk, that group talks too much, this group sells things at default, that group at one coin, this group doesn't advertise things in the paper, that group does, this group plays the town, that group doesn't ...
But things settled down. Find a balance in playing style and find (or make) a neighbourhood that suits it and the derby issues will settle down too. The derby hasn't changed the game any more than the neighbourhoods or town or chat functions did. But it might require another neighbourhood shuffle dance as we all sort ourselves out.
What I miss about the "good ol'days" is having something to strive for on an ongoing basis - and that's not something that was affected by Supercell throwing us a new twist. That's a problem with levelling up past the point that the game is focused on. No more products/machines to unlock, no more pets to buy, no more masteries (well, almost), no more achievements ... This I'd like addressed.
The changes brought on by Supercell adding fishing or boats or neighbourhoods or the town or the train or the bees or the derby to the game are minor. They just add another piece to the puzzle and finding a new balance is part of the fun. Of course, I have a neighbourhood that suits my play even with the derby included. There are a lot of posts here from farmers who've added the derby to their game instead of letting it take over their focus. I think there's a valuable lesson in there somewhere, and I firmly believe there's an end to the strife that's touching the forum with all the derby talk. It starts with Supercell deciding the derby looks how they want it (not how individuals do) and leaving it be so we can adjust. And yes, it includes changing neighbourhoods for some. But on the other side of it all, there'll be a thread started down the line referencing the derby as the good ol'days. Silly future farmers :smirk:
