I recently became TH8. As soon as my shield is down I usually get raided by maxed TH9 bases and get annihilated. I can't even hold on to gold, elixir or dark elixir for upgrade. I can't even upgrade my base anymore as no resource are left. Looks like supercells strategy to make us by using Gems!!!!!
Defending while Farming isn't impossible. Everyone was once a early TH 8 too.
Try around the Sliver 1 - 2 range. Put your Townhall on the outside of your base and you'll find a lot of players snipe your Townhall. Also try and spread your resource storages out so it's harder for people to get all of you resources.
can you take a picture of your base? so we can make a more accurate assessment

Stay out of silver, it's madness. Go to around 1550, there are still some TH9 bases but not many compared to other leagues, and there is good loot for TH8. Make sure your TH is outside, get level 5 arch ASAP and try to get 75% level 7 walls, level 6 mortars and level 5 wizard towers; these are huge deterrents for TH9s simply rolling their face over the screen to take your loot with barch. My time as an early TH8 wasn't too bad, as I had fully maxed out my TH7 (Level 2 dragons, Level 5 king, full purple walls) and dragon-raided with my excess elixir while I was waiting for my barbarians and archers to get level 5. TH9 rarely raided me as I was constantly dumping gold into getting my new walls purpled and any elixir I had leftover from lab upgrades into dragon armies; I had no loot to take. Try spending some loot and you'll be a smaller target.

As a former TH8 I would have the agree with you. Your layout will do little to impact the brutal attacks you will recieve on your base- the Queen is sinply too powerful for any TH8 (and even TH9s) to defend against. I suggest you place your TH in the corner surrounded by a minimum of two layers of decorations to entice snipes and leave a free builder to dump any excess gold when going offline. If nothing change I suggest experimenting with different leagues- the most largely populated regions for TH9s would be Silver and Crystal so stick to Gold.
Having high level walls also dissuades most attackers. As long as you have a form of loot dumping (if you plan to max your walls expose your elixir storages and place them on the perimeter of your base) you shouldn't be attracting many TH9s.
Your base is pretty premmie and th9s feed on th8...it's their main source of loot. Just have to get used to it until you base is stronger.

Farm in sessions of an hour to two when you know an upgrade is coming up. Farming in sessions keeps you from getting raided, and at least when you get off, after an hour or two of farming you will (should) have enough resources to offset any loss and still make out with a nice profit. I usually farm up to max and get raided once for the shield then get off.
