While they both have their pros and cons, I use BAM over Barch just for the faster training.

Minions are great for breaking the ring, so barbs and archers can dive into the core.
Minions die fast, so you can't just spam them. Ash used mostly BAM to get his heroes to level 40. He has one video that provides a good demonstration of breaking the ring to steer the troops to the DE storage with little to no spells.

Bam is great at th8. I have 2 barracks barbs, 2 archers and 1 minions. If you like more archers just put 20 archers at the front of the barb barracks queue. I use 1 barracks for minions as with 2 you'll have a lot less barch than you need.
I mainly barch bases and use minions on collecters out of reach of aerial defences. The minions can come in handy if mortars and wizard towers are in range or collecters. Plus minions can take out a king with minimal troop space.
I've come across quite a few bases where some storages aren't protected by archer towers/air defences so my minions can go in and get more resources than with a typical barch army.
I use 35 Minions 70 Archers 60 Barbs.
