The ring bases defend well against both air and ground that's why they are so common. The problem we have at the moment is air being so strong it's important to have a design that can defend it somewhat. The storage buffer sends the balloons around instead of inside the base as well as golems if you're lucky. Clever attackers can break the circle to get to the centre although just dumping double jumps from a corner to centre works also with late drop heroes. There are a few other designs that play on the placement of the air def to mess up air attacks but they are very hit and miss in my experience.
