There all good for different circumstances.
- Air defense for Dragons, Balloons etc.
- Wizard Towers for mass Goblin or infantry, minions etc.
- Mortars for mass infantry
- Teslas for PEKKA's (2x Damage), Golems and other high health troops
- Inferno towers for Golems, Heroes, Dragons and other high health troops, weak against mass infantry
- Archer Towers for Most troops as they shoot air and ground and have good DPS (and 1 shot minions), but weak against mass infantry
- Cannons for ground troops, weak against mass infantry
- X-Bows for ground troops when set to ground and all troops when set to air, weak against mass infantry
All the defences tie in to work together to do their jobs the best as they all have their strengths and weaknesses and there is no single best defence.

Space is my best defence, with two tiles clear of buildings round my TH. I have not had worse than a 1* loss since installing this, and get as many wins as losses. Wins give 25 or more cups, and losses are less the 6 cups usually. Because of the AI of attacking troops always wanting to go to the next nearest building, the space means that my TH seems invisible to them. Hence only a 1* loss if they do well, and a big yippee if they fail. I am TH 10, so have an Inferno Tower, but the principle will apply well, I think, to lower level THs.

JY just said in an interview with Flammy that the walls were the scariest defense he has to face. If his bombers don't do right, then the rest of the troops get stuck outside and pounded by the def towers. Makes sense to me.

Definitely clan castle. Mortar are not important if you have more than 2500 trophies, I think

I guess I am one of the few who voted Hidden Tesla. Most underrated tower in my opinion! When upgraded to level 5 and up, they can be a game changer if placed smart. Most other defenses are visible for 30 seconds, giving the attacker time to size you up. The Tesla has the element of surprise that can swing the battle in your favor when used right. Try to allow it to spring up while behind a wall and attacking troops are not able to attack it right away. This allows it to be most effective. The problem out there I see is too many Teslas at level 1 or 2. They are not as good but still help if in the right spot!

Ive got to say mortars. They have MASSIVE damage, especially to tier 1 troops, and have big range, which makes it, likely better than the wiz tower.

Mortars and Wizzy Towers definately. Very Powerful Stuff.

Archer Towers are the backbone of a good defense and can shoot both air and ground units. Mortars are also very important so it is hard to choose.
