I just got lava hounds and am ready to take them to war! I was planning on using loons in war but my loons are still level 5 ( level 6 in a week) So should I pair with my dragons? Also with the sweeper affecting loons more I wonder if I should go with dragons.
Any thoughts?
It depends on the base, but in general you can expect the following behavior using hounds+drags: The hounds zoom in to the air defenses, and all surrounding defenses pound the hounds. The hounds burst and produce pups that are also taken out by the defenses. In the meantime, the drags have just taken out the outer layer of junk and storages, and are now starting to attack the outer defenses.
In general you want the following to happen with hounds+loons: The hounds zoom in to the air defenses, and all surrounding defenses pound the hounds. Meanwhile, the loons have started engaging the outer defenses, and they are safe from fire because all of them are focusing on the hounds. The outer defenses are now gone, and the loons hit the ADs just before or after the first hounds pop. Raged pups + loons take out everything.
Basically, if the base layout is different, use one way or another to exploit its weakness. At this stage I have not come across a air blower that made a real difference to the attack. Suspect it will change as they are upgraded and bases start adapting to their use better.
At TH9 mass dragons will only get you 2 stars in war. It's virtually impossible to get 3 stars with dragons, even when using hounds to tank. Level 5 balloons will also get crushed by any remotely decent TH9.
I would suggest waiting until you have level 6 loons before using your lava hounds.

I hit the easy base with a well thought lavaloon and failed completely 46% and 0 star.
I hit the hard base with lava and dragons and got a solid 2 stars.
Moral of story? Don't try lavaloon with lvl 5 loons.
