What happens to troops that are not used up during a farming raid? I recall reading somewhere, but can't find it again, that the elixir used to build these troops is refunded. Is this the case, or is the elixir written off?

What they say in the game is something like, "the elixir melts back into the ground," but what that really means is no, you don't get it back.
They pop to the thin air!
If you deploy the troops they are gone for good, whether they survive or not. If you have troops that you didn't end up deploying then you will keep them in your camps for next time.
