fences works well. just make a pen for them. they like to lay on top of each other, so feeding the one you want can be a challenge, but they aren't playing in the road.
Something has happened in the previous update...pets are supposed to stay to the pathways and not walk through walls, fences etc. this has happened before and when we get an update this issue is fixed. My pets are certainly not staying within fences and to pathways at the moment whereas before the update they did. I am pretty sure I read in one of the other sections that they are aware animals are roaming again and it will be fixed.
I bet it's related to the new land across the road.
Pets used to stay on one side of the road. Now they can cross the street.
They walk thru fences, bushes, buildings, soil plots, fences of wood and stone. They walk to the end of the game map. The cat even was sitting calmly next to the furnace which was an area it never went into.
Oh, this is a glitch? I was enjoying seeing them wander, they really like the forest across the road. I guess I will just enjoy it while it lasts...lol

I am trying to get used to the wandering. They routinely get run over by the WOF truck. So far I have not found ANYTHING that they can't walk through.
My dogs and cats are levitating over the trees across the road, walking on water (the river!) and generally ignoring the laws of physics. They have always walked through walls and hedges. The town visitors stick to the paths and open areas; I don't see why the pets can't be programmed to do the same thing. My farm is set up so that, if there were a farmer, all areas would be accessible. I love seeing my animals wandering around the farm, but it would be way more interesting if they were following my 'plan'. If they keep walking through solid objects, come Halloween I think I might have to hire the Ghostbusters.
I hate that my animals wonder my farm I put them behind fences for a reason drives me nuts
