As far away from TH as possible and closest to containers as practical.
That's a terrible idea if you're farming. You'll want to make sure you get that cheap shield so anything that makes a potential "helper" skip your base is not useful.
the BK is not terribly useful on defense, but I keep mine in the centre of the base with the CC, so he's not too easy to lure him out. He does help somewhat at least. He's not a priority, though - so if I need that central real estate for something more crucial I'll kick him out without hesitation. But I definitely keep him far away from my TH.
My king and queen are offense only, i like to save the center of my base for key defenses.
I've experimented with CC and Barb King in the center, he performs well but not that much better. Somewhere near the center is fine imho, within the walls of the base. I wouldn't waste it near the outside TH as Aranthalion explained.
His usefullness depends on what is attacking you
Verses Healer/Giants - He will seriously mess with this composition
Archers/Barbs - He will fail miserablly because can only take one out at a time
So, if big nasty ground units attack he helps but if masses of weak units attack, he only really serves as a distraction.
I try and put in close to the center because the bigger and badder unit are more likely to get past the 1 set of defenses first
Outside walls away from TH.
I would personally just use them for offence rather than defense but in terms of placing put them outside of the walls.
Outside of walls that is still within range of towers (almost near the edge of the map) is the most logical for Barb King to be at. If you put him on the center, he's just wasting a spot where a Mortar, Wiz Tower, or Xbow should have been placed. He kinda acts like a secondary wall that can buy time for your towers to shoot down at anything.
For Archer Queen, it's a bit of a different story. She is a walking turret herself, so take advantage of that. She has 5 tile range. Make her unlureable by centralizing her just like the CC.
